AdWatch: 'Martha Wong Does Not Represent You'

by: Ryan Goodland on Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 08:09:12 AM CDT

Third Thursday PAC starts running this ad today in a Houston cable market against beleaguered incumbent Martha Wong:

This is one of the most creative ads I've seen this cycle: no talking and no images, just text on a screen against sound effects and a piano score. It's also one of the best ads I've seen this cycle, and judging by how the past week has treated Martha Wong, she can't be too happy about getting called on her record.

Awesome. (0.00 / 0)
Even Governor MoFo's pollster Mike Baselice says Martha Wrong is running six to eight points behind Ellen.

This ad keeps our foot on the gas.

But, let me ask this question: how many people, from time to time, get up during commercials to get something from the fridge or run out of your seat? (Everyone does, every now and then).

When you've got a medium like television, you need to use all parts of it. If I just heard this ad, I'd probably think it was a car insurance commercial.

Great idea, and it's well executed for what it tried to achieve -- I just think that if you don't incorporate image and sound into your ad, then you've given up on half of the medium.

Huh?
When was the last time you were in the kitchen during a commercial break, then ran back into a room because the opening sounds in a political advertisement piqued your interest?

The whole benefit of the ad is that it's different. TV ads usually try to grab your attention by being as loud and direct as possible; being minimal sets it apart.

grin
Phillips coming at this from a media angle since he did that stuff back the other year. Granted, I know you are supposed to use all components possible, but this does cover visual plus visual with mute on. If the ad is more effective because of the lack of the audio part, then it can be fine, but I understand the different approaches. Plus, this isn't from the Cohen campaign as I understand it and most 3rd party groups do tend to do their ads differently.

Yes, but what would Treaty Oak have to say about it?

Hahaha...
No, the point isn't that you run back into the room -- the point is that you can hear it from another room.

It's a different ad -- that's cool. But the object is to force the ad to stick in your memory. For example -- I hated that Chevy truck ad that played throughout the UT-OU game. Seriously, it probably ran 12 times in the first quarter. But I still remember Sabbath's "Iron Man" playing every time, and it stuck with me through the weekend.

Maybe
Maybe people will learn to associate piano music, cash registers, and crying babies to Martha Wong's failures as a legislator.

Don't forget coughing
and the screech of braking tires an instant before a car crash.

(All sounds I already associated with Martha Wrong...)

Or does the music in this ad remind someone else of Charlie Brown?

I am completely not a fan of this ad.  Just because something is creative does NOT mean it's effective.  This is science, not art.
