Clinton to Hispanic Caucus: "Work As Hard for Barack Obama As You Worked for Me"

by: David Mauro

Mon Aug 25, 2008 at 09:00 AM CDT

On Monday, at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Hillary Clinton made it clear in her speech to the Hispanic Caucus that the stakes were far too high in this election to not work tirelessly to elect Barack Obama.

Clinton accurately stated that Republicans would try to divide us and distract Democrats from the ultimate goal by trying to rehash the battles of the primaries.

She is exactly right. That is John McCain's strategy. He has several new ads that solely aim to persuade disgruntled Clinton supporters.

I believe Hillary Clinton's speech on Tuesday night will go a long way towards slamming the door on McCain's hopes to attract past Clinton supporters, which is a good thing not just for us here in Texas, but all across the nation.

For anyone who has the same mindset as Paul Moreno, think long and hard about these words:

“Every one of us could stand up and recite all the reasons why we must elect Barack. The Supreme Court is at stake; our educational system needs the right kind of change. We’ve got to become energy independent; we have to create millions of new green collar jobs. We’ve got so much work to do around the world.

“None of that will happen if John McCain is in the White House. I just want to make it absolutely clear we cannot afford four more years of George W. Bush’s failed policies in America, and that’s what we would get with John McCain.

"Now I understand that the McCain campaign is running ads trying to divide us, and let me state what I think about their tactics and these ads: I am Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message.

“So let there be no mistake about it, we are united. We are united for change.”

Obama focuses spending on Hispanics (0.00 / 0)
In an article in the E-N today it appears the Obama campaign will focus $20 million in four key states to mobilize Hispanic voters.  Unfortunately Texas is not one of those states.

Four States with floor seats at the DNC. (0.00 / 0)
Now if I could just figure out the Guam angle... ;-)

Is this an issue? (0.00 / 0)
Last I saw, Obama was outpolling McCain with Hispanics 3:1. The "Hispanics won't vote for Obama" meme was something that's been buried and dismissed on national blogs for a while.

The question isn't directed towards you, David -- just a general one. It's good to read on what Clinton said. I just didn't think this was still a real concern for any significant percentage of voters...

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

I threw a 3:1 party here on BOR... (0.00 / 0)
But the turnout was small. Maybe next time I shouldn't make it BYOB?

i don't think it is so much an issue of "will they vote for him" as it is "will they turn out for him?".

the general sentiment among Hispanic leaders that i have spoken with on the issue is that they don't feel the energy and excitement. we need to be running a better percentage among Hispanics and we need to be getting them engaged and worked up about changing this country...and we don't have to talk about immigration to do it.

3-5% increased Hispanic straight tickets can change our country dramatically (and shift a few key seats in Texas as well).

as with African-American votes in the past: we'll get 88% of what comes out...we just can't get a high number to turnout.

I agree with Colin (0.00 / 0)
Several Texas Democrats, including Leticia Van de Putte, have commented on an enthusiasm gap in their communities.

Ultimately, I think Obama will do very well among Hispanics.

The same gap... (5.00 / 1)
...that is there every general election year? The same gap that caused the big ruckus with the prima-caucus stuff?

The cause isn't Obama/Clinton. The Obama/Clinton stuff just exposed the long-standing fact in Texas that Texas Democrats generally do a poor job turning out the Hispanic vote. Only recently have statewide campaigns begun to understand issues important to Hispanics, but only tepidly. And there still is no real ground-plan for how to turn out the Hispanic vote in Texas anywhere south of I-10.

Bell didn't have any real plan for turning out Hispanics, so he didn't do a lot anywhere south of I-10, so he didn't get a lot of votes. Noriega's name isn't going to do that much better, and until their campaign raises some real dollars and puts some -- ANY -- kind of plan in place, he's not going to get a big boost from Hispanics, either.

Turning to statewide campaigns to do this, though, is a worthless strategy. There needs to be local leaders in local counties that are interested in developing long-term Democratic Party IDs and community outreach. Until that happens -- or until a statewide candidate just has a few million to flood the Hispanic communities with advertisements -- the "enthusiasm gap" will still exist.

In two years, when we're trying to elect a Democrat Governor, this same problem will be here. So let's stop thinking of it all in an Obama/Clinton framework, and start realizing that local leaders need to stand up and make the change they want to see.

At Last (0.00 / 0)
Now here's a bit of sense. This has to be done locally. And of course many younger Latinos will vote for Obama. If they turn out.

Latino voters as a whole are interested in the same things as any other Texan. Jobs, taxes, education, getting our folks home from Iraq.

One of the real problems I've seen with the Democrats trying to interest Latinos is their support of illegal immigration in the mistaken assumption that they are in favor of it. Most Latino citizens realize its a detriment to them and their children.

As an example most Latino parents oppose the apartheid policy bi-lingual education, but it is still rammed down their throats. Who are they blaming? Not the Republicans.

yes yes and yes (0.00 / 0)
yes, gap usually exists about the average Dem candidate...but we haven't had an ugly primary in quite some time and not one this deep into TEXAS in eons. what we are really talking about is folks that WERE engaged and energized and AREN'T anymore. that is unique to this race.

yes, there is (once again) no real plan to target or turnout Hispanics and other Dems south of I10.

yes, we need local leaders to step up and write the checks to get the work done.

noriega can't really help with turnout if no one knows who he is and if he continues to lack a profile. i've never seen a better argument for 4x8s and billboards (which i hate).

Do you really think Rick has a chance? I never did and still can't see it.

Except for a tremendous boo-boo by Cornyn....which is certainly possible.

Maybe (0.00 / 0)
It is the comments by people like Van de Putte, Moreno, etc (along with the recent El Paso poll) that have me worried a little.

I completely agree with you otherwise, though.

[ Parent ]
Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I totally agree. The majority Latino vote will go for Obama. The Republicans aren't offering anything but more of the same.

The problem is McCain is winning right now and I don't see how it can be changed without a major move by Senator Obama.

There's always "Daddy Yankee." (0.00 / 0)
Speaking of which, how long do you think the conversation explaining what "reggaetón" is took between McCain and his handlers?

I doubt they even tried to explain it ... (0.00 / 0)
Some people (John McCain) are hopeless.

One sweep throught Texas by Clinton (0.00 / 0)
could change things dramatically for us.
Surely they can squeeze in 2-3 days in Texas over the next 2 months, no?

I expect Hillary to come to South Texas (0.00 / 0)
to campaign for Rick Noriega, Obama, etc. before the election.

Moreno still sticking to his position (0.00 / 0)
In an article today by R.G. Ratcliffe it appears State Rep. Paul Moreno hasn't budged from his position of non-support of Obama. One of the issues cited by Moreno is the "conduct that he demostrated during this campaign."

What is it going to take for Moreno to realize this kind of attitude is destructive? Or is Moreno a part of a culture that is out of touch with the reality of the situation? Is it time for El Paso Democrats to put someone else in office who truly understands what is at stake?

::sigh:: (0.00 / 0)
Moreno told the Houston Chronicle he based his thinking on "the conduct that he (Obama) demonstrated during this campaign. He never once mentioned Cesar Chavez in the speeches that I heard."
