A Primary Brewing Against Dawnna Dukes

by: Matt Glazer

Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 11:16 AM CST

In a piece about Speaker politics and primaries across the state, we finally give a name to a rumor that has been circulating across Travis County.

From the Austin American Statesman:

This summer a faction of Austin Democrats tried - and failed - to find Dukes an early opponent. But Brian Thompson, a lawyer who works at McGinnis, Lochridge & Kilgore and who serves on the Austin Human Rights Commission, said Friday he is being encouraged by Democratic activists to challenge Dukes.

"We're tired of being represented by a Republican-funded politician who has pledged absolute loyalty to Republican Speaker Tom Craddick and puts her own political ambition and self-interest ahead of the best interests of the good people of East Austin," Thompson said.

Dukes represents the last Republican in Austin, even though she has run with a D next to her name for over a decade.  We will be keeping a very close eye on this race as it develops.

Dawnna's Disregard (0.00 / 0)

That same Statesman story has a killer quote from Colin Strother, Dawnna's political consultant, in which he says this about her longtime Craddick alliance:
"That whole line of Dawnna voting for Craddick has no traction.  It hasn't come up. This is Austin, probably the most politically aware city in the state, and they have no idea who he is."
I'm not sure who Colin accuses of being idiots with that quote, Austinites in general or District 46 residents in particular.  But in either case, does the gist of his remark reflects her thinking?  After all, he's speaking on her behalf.

I had the same reaction.

"That whole line of Dawnna voting for Craddick has no traction.  It hasn't come up. This is Austin, probably the most politically aware city in the state, and they have no idea who he is."

It's rather offensive for the representative of a State Representative to claim that we [the constituents of her district] have no idea who the speaker of the house is, especially one that is as controversially undemocratic as he is. Just a thought.

A great democracy must be progressive or it will soon cease to be a great democracy.

Bay Area Houston has an article about some of Dukes' spending habits.

I don't think we're as uninformed as he thinks.  And, isn't that the point of primaries?  To inform those who don't know...
