Houston Mayor Annise Parker To Wed Partner

Hubbard and Parker

Houston Mayor Annise Parker will marry Kathy Hubbard in January. Parker and Hubbard have been together for 23 years, during which Houston became the most populous American city to elect an openly gay mayor. Parker has been very popular, and voters re-elected her for the second and final time earlier this year.

The mayor "long has pledged that she and Hubbard would not marry until Texas legalized same-sex marriage," the Houston Chronicle explains. "In recent public statements, though, the mayor has suggested she might reconsider her position. She said developments such as the Supreme Court's striking down of the federal Defense of Marriage Act have prompted her to consider the message her inaction might be sending to the couple's two adopted children."

There's an amazing story about a third adopted child of the couple, now a grown man. In 1993, Parker found a boy named Jovon Tyler wandering around her neighborhood, and asked him what was going on. He told her that his grandparents kicked him out for being gay. Parker "gave the youth the keys to the house, then broke the news to Hubbard," the Chronicle explains. Tyler is now 37 and has two loving parents: Parker and Hubbard.

They will marry in Palm Springs, California - one of eighteen states that have enacted marriage equality. Parker herself has not yet announced the marriage; the story came to Texas newspapers from reliable sources. "The mayor very much appreciates the interest in the 23-year relationship she has shared with her life partner, First Lady Kathy Hubbard. However, marriage is a private matter and she has no announcements she wishes to make at this time. If that changes, we will let you know," a Parker spokesperson said.

This will be the first same-sex marriage of a Texas mayor in history.
