Texas Republicans Claim Voter ID is Needed...Because They Say So??

by: Phillip Martin

Mon Apr 28, 2008 at 09:25 PM CDT

Here are two facts:

  • The U.S. Supreme Court stated in their opinion that there was absolutely no evidence of voter fraud in Indiana. (Source)
  • There has not been a single case of voter fraud in Texas over the past dozen years that could be mitigated with the voter ID laws proposed by Republicans the Texas Legislature. (Source)

Now, with those two facts, here is the claim made by Texas Republicans, in response to today's U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding Indiana's voter ID law:

"'Today's 6-3 decision by the court shows that the policies proposed in House Bill 218 and similar legislation are consistent with the U.S. Constitution and represent our intent to strengthen and protect our election system for all voters. It is our hope that in the 2009 session the Texas Senate will be able to follow suit and join with the House to pass this important and needed law."

If there is absolutely no evidence of voter fraud in Indiana, and the Republican Attorney General admits that voter fraud is not a serious issue in Texas --  then why is this an "important and needed law?"

Here's why: BECAUSE THE REPUBLICANS SAY SO.

No facts. No evidence. No truth to any of their false statements.

And sadly, no surprise. Allowing Republicans an opportunity to make it more difficult for minorities and the elderly to vote is reason enough to try and pass these voter ID laws.

Here's what real courage for voter ID laws looks like:

Adding this must see video highlights what a life or death issue this has been and will continue to be.  If Democrats do not pick up some seats in November, voter ID will become Texas law in 2009.

Nice, except you completely misread my post.

I stated above:

There has not been a single case of voter fraud in Texas over the past dozen years that could be mitigated with the voter ID laws proposed by Republicans the Texas Legislature.

That's different than saying it doesn't exist entirely (which is what you represented in your post).

If I'd said what you're claiming I said, you'd be right. But you conveniently misread what I wrote, so...

Thanks for reading!

Phillip, please remember this outrage at the possibility that poor or elderly voters might have difficulty voting the next time you defend caucuses as a valid way to vote.

Sorry to go off topic a bit, but I am much more outraged by the barrier to vote that a caucus presents than the need to present a photo ID.

I understand that caucuses (or precinct conventions as we have in TX) build connectivity for the party and have other benefits that you care about, but you must believe that they present a far higher burden than presenting a photo ID.

And on the topic of the need for ID, I frankly don't see the big deal as long as a free ID is available from the state.

whoa ...here a bit boys (0.00 / 0)

Is it a fact that democrat caucus attendees needed to show a valid TX Driver license to attend and participate for either Hilary or Obama?
