'Rent to Own' Scandal Haunts Brimer

by: Todd Hill

Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 10:00 AM CDT

No matter where Kim Brimer campaigns throughout Senate District 10 the "Rent to Own" scandal continues to haunt him.  Matt Angle's Lone Star Project combed through Brimer's campaign filings and TEC reports to reach the following conclusion:

The Lone Star Project has conducted an examination of both your campaign filings to the TEC and of real estate transactions involving a luxury condominium located in Austin within the exclusive Westgate Towers.  It is clear from official documents and transaction records, that you spent a number of years using campaign funds to further enrich yourself through the purchase and ultimate sale of the Westgate condo.

LSP concludes that through Brimer's luxury condo sale; combined with his improper campaign payments to his wife's realty business, give Kim a net profit of $357,000.  At a time when wages for Texas workers is stagnant, the home mortgage crisis is crippling our economy, gas prices are devastating, health care costs are skyrocketing, and inflation is pinching Senate District 10 families, Kim Brimer continues to think of his own well being and not the well being of Texas families.

Texas can no longer afford the Brimer Loophole.  In November, Senate District 10 voters have a clear choice between an elaborate get-rich-quick-schemer in Kim Brimer, or a real candidate in Wendy Davis who understands that Texas is at a crossroads and that Tarrant County needs progressive leadership representing them in Austin.  As the ghosts of 'Rent to Own' continue and haunt the current Republican state senator from district 10, Tarrant County can turn a page with a fresh face and a fresh approach in dealing with the problems we face as a state.

$10K Fine (0.00 / 0)
Goodman, who exercised the same loophole, was fined $10,000.  He's appealing the fine, but I can't see how Brimer avoids the fine.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I can't either.  In fact I think Matt Angle does a great job in calling Brimer out, doing the math, and adding up for voters that Brimer = corruption.

I hope they fine Brimer before November for obvious reasons.

I have to just add too how wonderful Wendy Davis was at the MCD Speed Campaign forum last Saturday.  She gave a great speech and has such a compelling story that just moves you.  She is a very good speaker and has a good grasp of the issues.  She's a tough candidate and Brimer knows it.  That is why we saw all the dramatics in December 2007 with trying to push her off the ballot.

What about Wentworth? (0.00 / 0)
Unless I missed it, I haven't seen much of anything about Wentworth's suspect spending.  The Statesman didn't even pick it up, and Wentworth represents a decent portion of SW Travis County.  I would think accusations of nearly $1 million in illegally spent campaign funds would at least merit a mention...

Thanks for that link - He's my state senator (0.00 / 0)
From the article Roy linked to above:

Wentworth spending is criticized
(snip)
Palmer considers Wentworth's use of campaign money for repeated trips to the Bohemian Grove, a 2,700-acre campground owned by a private San Francisco art club, to be the most egregious example of inappropriate spending.

Only male members are allowed into the club, according to the complaint.

"The entertainment is expensive, including an elaborate Grove Play known as 'High Jinx' where female roles are played by men (members) in drag," the complaint states.

How rich!
