Ron Paul Rallies 4,000 Supporters Who Didn't Vote

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

I love politics. I love big rallies. I love campaigns that are upbeat, smart, and at times, a bit unorthodox.

But one thing that I don't love is stupid campaign practices and missed opportunities. Case in point: Ron Paul & his UT Campus rally last Saturday.

As the Daily Texan and others have reported, somewhere up to 4,000 students and supporters stood in front of the UT Tower Saturday to hear him speak. Look at the picture below to get a sense of this. (credit: Karl McDonald)

Wow. Impressive. Well...not so much apparently.

A mere 150 feet away, within eyesight of the gathered masses, was UT's on-campus Early Vote location at the Flawn Academic Center.

Here's what that 4,000 person rally was worth in terms of possible votes for Ron Paul.

54 votes on Saturday.

That makes these words quote by Ron Paul in that same Texan article so much truer.

"The enthusiasm is out of proportion to the number of people actually voting," Paul said at the press conference.

Indeed...by a factor of about 75 to 1.

Texan's bias again (0.00 / 0)
A 4,000 person rally is on the front page instead of Obama's 20-30,000 person rally on Friday.

I'm curios how many of those at the rally were from out of town.

Well (0.00 / 0)
It was a day later, and it was on campus. I guess.

perhaps they already voted earlier? (0.00 / 0)
that would be the obvious guess.  Funny to see you Obama folks get a case of crowd-envy. :)

That was my first thought (0.00 / 0)
...but the Republican early vote turnout is still abysmal compared to the size of that rally.

reminds me of some movie... (0.00 / 0)
Or was it the Simpsons???  Where one candidate had the support of everyone, except no one bothered to vote and he lost 2-1.  I think it was the Simpsons, Martin vs. Bart or something like that...

Not likely (0.00 / 0)
As you don't see large numbers voting the days before, about 300 total through Saturday.

Not everyone can vote at that precinct early. Also I'm sure he had some from out of town join in. I for one am waiting to vote on the 4th, because I will be attending the caucus and be an election judge.

4,000 isn't bad for someone who isn't mentioned on the media every hour on the hour. I doubt McCain could get those kind of numbers in Austin. As far as 19 or 20,000 at an Obama rally "NSYNC" had better numbers than that and look how much substance they had.

Most of them can (0.00 / 0)
Any of them that are voters in Travis County, which the vast majority of them were, could vote early on Campus.

Of course, if the vast majority were from out of the county, well, than that would say something about his lack of support among students or folks here in Austin (which has the largest Ron Paul meetup group in the nation, more than New York).

I think (0.00 / 0)
there actually is a good-sized Ron Paul community on campus.  I've heard students talking about him while they're in line at restaurants, which is pretty good for a Republican at UT.

Why the couldn't vote (0.00 / 0)
Actually most of the attendees could not vote because they were wearing Ron Paul T-shirts.  State Law prohibits people from entering a polling place while displaying a candidates name.

so turn it inside out (nt) (0.00 / 0)

Wow, what that solution was hard to come by (0.00 / 0)
Those people really are clueless.
