1000+ Volunteers Sign in at Clinton HQ, Thousands Expected Tonight

by: David Mauro

Sat Feb 16, 2008 at 04:12 PM CST

Disclosure: I am taking time off from school to work for Hillary Clinton's campaign.

After precinct caucus trainings this morning led by former TDP Exec. Director Nancy Willaims and an event with United Farm Workers President Dolores Huerta just beginning as I write this, the Hillary Clinton headquarters in south Austin had logged in over 1100 volunteers today.

In her speech, Huerta cited Clinton's experience registering voters in South Texas in the early 1970s and said she "is no Johnny-Come Lately" to the issues that are important to Texans.

As Travis County Commissioner Margaret Gomez said in her endorsement statement today, "My constituents and I are standing with Hillary because she has stood for us. That won't change when she gets to the White House."

There's a lot of excitement here growing for President Clinton's visit tonight. Parking may be hard to come by. If you come down tonight be sure to say hello.

And for you Ugly Betty fans, actress America Ferrera will be holding several Austin events in support of Senator Clinton, including a 1pm rally tomorrow at Joe's Bar & Grill at 6th St & West.

Wow (3.00 / 1)
For both of these events to be on the same day, at the same time, in the same city AND both have over 1,000 is insane.

When you consider the crappy weather it is even more impressive.

I'm extremely impressed with the schedule of public appearances both Clinton's are keeping up.  I imagine it has been a while since a presidential contender went to Longview and Lufkin.

Dems in East Texas have lost a lot of ground to repubs in the last 15 years and they are awfully hungry for a reason to be a proud-in-public Democrat.

Both of these campaigns should remind us all that we're right and they're wrong on the biggest issues of our times.

It was an exciting time and a great experience (0.00 / 0)
It was also cold as hell outside!  I couldn't stay for the President's event tonight, but the excitement was very encouraging.  So encouraging I made 100 calls today for Hillary!

Great job guys & gals!

Turnout? (0.00 / 0)
How many people were inside? I know, it was as many as the fire marshals would allow, but how many is that? I guesstimated the outdoor crowd to be a little under 1,000, including me and my daughter.  I read in today's paper that the Clinton campaign claimed a total attendance of 4,700. Is that realistic?

The crowds at both events yesterday were large and diverse. As expected, the Clinton event drew more Hispanics and very few African-Americans, but the biggest difference was in age. The average age at the Clinton event was at least 10 years older than at the Obama event.

There were plenty of young people (0.00 / 0)
at the event.

We had several officers from University Democrats, including President Laura Hernandez who endorsed Hillary and made a great speech to the crowd.

It was nice to meet you last night, also.

The inside was jammed wall-to-wall and there was barely enough room to breath. The 4700 number is accurate.

And plenty of older people, too (0.00 / 0)
The age demographics at the Clinton event were pretty uniform, with youth represented but not over-represented. At the Obama event, youth were over-represented and there weren't many people over 50. From what I could tell, the median age at the Clinton rally was in the 40s, and at the Obama event it was around 30.

Of course, for Clinton that's only the folks waiting in the cold -- I never made it inside!

It was a pleasure meeting you, too. Even when we disagree, I really appreciate your posts.

While I found quite a few people (0.00 / 0)
in their 50's, there were a lot in their 40's and quite a lot of people like me in their 30's, and even in their 20's.  So I would say that the age range was very diverse.  And yes, it was COLD outside! lol..
