Ron Paul exploring run for the Presidency

by: RBH

Thu Jan 11, 2007 at 05:27 PM CST

(It's official, he's filed papers to run as a Republican. Maybe it's a good thing TexRoots endorsed Shane Sklar ran against him last year after all... - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

I guess we know the exit strategy for removing Paul from the 14th District: The Republicans somehow lure Paul into running for the Presidency, he fails, and he retires from Congress at the end of the 110th. Then the Republicans try to get their guy in the 14th.

The story is posted by The Star-Telegram.

But he said the campaign will test its ability to attract financial and political support before deciding whether to launch a full-fledged campaign. Snyder said Paul is not running just to make a point or to try to ensure that his issues are addressed, but to win.

I guess Ron can cite his experience in not doing things as a selling point. Because he certainly doesn't have any better card.

Ron Paul will be 73 in 2008. I wouldn't be stunned if he retires from Congress after this year. At the very least, that should inspire some attention to the race for his district. Although the odds of a totally whacked out guy winning there are dampened by the runoff rule. But when you consider the voting base in that area, it's possible that a pretty conservative person gets the nod.

For the purposes of reference, the last time Ron Paul ran for a big office as a Republican, he lost 78-16 to Phil Gramm.

So Ron Paul, we salute you in your hopeless voyage. Enjoy Iowa and New Hampshire! (unless the direct mail libertarian money circuit doesn't produce enough to make you wanna run)

I'm so Jazzed about this (0.00 / 0)
I think i'm just about able to stop laughing about this possibility!

Sorry I was the first to post a comment and vote on the poll -- but I love it that 100% polled believe that Ron Paul for president is a win-win yahoooooooo bet.

I can't wait to see the final results.

Who do we have? (0.00 / 0)
If Paul were to vacate the seat, who would be our top choices?  Would Sklar be interested in another run?  Wasn't there some Democrat out of Galveston that people were mentioning for Lt. Gov a few years back?  I guess Galveston would be where we get the lion's share of Democratic votes in the 14th, but I'm not too familiar w/ the district.  Who do the Republicans have within this district?

of Tony Buzbee

Yeah, (0.00 / 0)
Buzbee is who I'm thinking of! Thanks, david.  Wonder if he'd be interested?  Perhaps we should try to recruit someone with Galveston County roots, for this district?  Just a thought...

We should alsolutely encourage him to run (0.00 / 0)
Paul might actually be another Ross Perot spoiler for the Republican candidate in '08.  When he doesn't win the Republican nomination, maybe he'll get juiced up about a run as an independent or libertarian.

Run Paul, Run!

Wouldn't count on it... (0.00 / 0)
Paul only pulled 0.5% of the popular vote in the '88 race.

'08 isn't '88 (0.00 / 0)
And you know that.

Thought you fancied yourself a Libertarian.  Do I misremember?

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

I'm sure Paul is excitingly waiting for your call (0.00 / 0)
I think if he's come out in public saying he's going to put together a committee, then he has some big ambitions.  And there are certainly enough nut cases on the right, that aren't happy with the republican party.  They would absolutely throw money and votes Paul's way.  Are you just scared your party will open it's tent to more nut jobs?

I guess there just wasnt' enough crazy a-holes getting into this race.

Give Sklar a shot (0.00 / 0)
For Ron Paul to vacate this seat may not be quite the blessing everyone thinks it is.  A Democratic challenger's best asset in this conservative district would always be Paul's wacky voting record, which can be just as unsettling to Republicans as to Democrats.

That being said, Shane Sklar was a helluva candidate; his efforts fell short mostly due to a lack of name identification. More time and more exposure can help to rectify that situation, while we can only expect Shane's experiences on the campaign trail to strengthen his ability to attract more support.

All of this would be contingent, of course, on the candidate's willingness to once again take on the challenge of running such a difficult race.  Democrats need candidates like Shane on our ticket, so let's be as suportive as possible!

Shane could be (0.00 / 0)
the Paul Hodes of 2008!

Hodes got 36% or so in 2004 in NH-2 and went on to win this year with 53% (same with McNerney in CA-11)

If Shane goes again, I'll support him.

He doesn't have to vacate his seat to run though (0.00 / 0)
I agree that if Shane  were to get a second chance at this seat in an open race i.e. no incumbent he would win.

I don't think Paul has to give him his seat to run however, and I'm sure he won't.
