What a Way to Go, Joe

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman on Mon Jul 03, 2006 at 17:15:21 PM CDT

While I'm not sure how our Lieberman delegate and blogging friend Greg Wythe is taking it, it's a dismal day for Joe Lieberman as the former 'next vice-president of the United States' looks to be running away from the Democratic primary in Connecticut.

Washington Post: Facing a stronger-than-expected Democratic primary challenge and sagging poll numbers because of his support of the Iraq war, Sen. Joe Lieberman said Monday he'll collect signatures for an independent campaign if he loses next month's primary.

"While I believe that I will win the Aug. 8 primary, I know there are no guarantees in elections," Lieberman told reporters on the steps of Connecticut's statehouse. "No one really knows how many Democrats will come out to vote on what may be a hot day in August."

It's only July and it seems that someone is feeling the heat a bit early.

I never thought that Joe Lieberman in Connecticut and Carole Keeton Strayhorn in Texas would have something in common. I guess when you can't win a primary, run as an independent!

He's calling himself a (0.00 / 0)
"petitioning Democrat".  How pathetic.

And what a tremendous mistake those Democratic Senators who choose him over their party will be making.

sure
And Carole 'is still a Republican but running as an Independent'.

I can understand it in the primary, but after it, or if he abandons it, there is no excuse. Joe can team up with Kerry and Carole in the flip-flopper club.

Yes, but what would Treaty Oak have to say about it?

Re (2.00 / 1)
In What's the Matter with Connecticutt I suggested that someone push Lieberman to save his party by running for Governor and running a unity campaign with Lamont.

But then, Lieberman has never worried about his party - why should he start now?

Liberman is a patriot (0.00 / 0)
I commend him for saying this.

He cares about the people of his state, and while Id more rather have a republican in there..he is an honorable man, who deserves to be in office.

you know
Your kind words for Lieberman are kinda like us bloggers praising Carter Casteel. I'm not sure it helped/will help either of their causes...

Yes, but what would Treaty Oak have to say about it?

Caucus?!? (0.00 / 0)
Surely he will not caucus with the Republicans?  You think?  If he wins the election as an Independent, that is.

I don't see a comparison with Carol 4-names (0.00 / 0)
She was the Comptroller and she did NOT file to run again, for a pretty darn safe seat.  She also did not run in the primary against Perry and during the primary race threaten people who didn't vote for her that if she lost, she was going to run against Perry again in the general.

She chose a race and entered it, up front.  On the other hand Joe'mentum entered the Democratic primary and now is saying if he loses, he's going to challenge the winner of the primary he's already in.

Next thing you know, he'll be househunting in Virginia.

Or he will claim he is the Senataor from
Northern California.

That's always another fall back.

Re:
Actually, she entered the primary and then pulled out a month later because she saw how hopeless it was.

Since she had to raise signatures from people who didn't participate in the primary, I don't think she was doing anything different than Lieberman at all.

Except that Joe has always been a Democrat, no matter how uncomfortable.  Grandma will jump ship at the drop of a hat and call that principled.

I guess I missed Lieberman's withdrawal
from the Democratic Primary.  I was under the impression he remains a candidate in the offical Democratic Primary and if elected, he will run as the Democratic candidate and if he loses, he will file to run against the Democratic Party's chosen candidate.  So, one way or the other, he plans to be on the November ballot.

If he has withdrawn from the primary and if elected in the primary, will not run as the party's candidate, I stand corrected.

Does that say something about Lieberman's withdrawal?

Nope.  The only mention of withdrawal was from Grandma Many-Names.

Holy Shit! (0.00 / 0)
A crazy ass scenerio: In November the Democrats take back the Senate with a 51 seat majority, which includes Sen. Lieberman (I-CT)!  How screwed up would that be for a Democratic majority to be beholden to the likes of Joe Lieberman...crap!

Loserman (0.00 / 0)
needs to admit he is out of touch with his district and America and bow out gracefully when he gets his ass handed to him in the primary.  Running as a "petitioning" democrat just screws the party and the voters.
