January 20, 2006Update: Felix Alvardo Off the BallotBy Phillip MartinLast night, we heard rumors from fellow Texas blogs that Felix Alvardo was kicked off the Democratic gubernatorial primary ballot running. Today, it's official. From the Statesman:
Alvarado was a very hard worker, and may very well end up on the ballot some day - just not this year. I hope he continues staying active in his communities, and runs again next time. Posted by Phillip Martin at January 20, 2006 09:25 AM | TrackBackComments
That would almost guarentee no run-offs, since I expect the Bell/Gammage margin to be greater than what Jafer can cook up. Only the Lt. Gov race or Senate seat could even possibly go to run off. It's official in the Austin American Statesman this morning. NPR reported that some claim it was because Alvardo is hispanic, but Alvardo has taken responsiblity for the mistake. Posted by: Damon C at January 20, 2006 07:09 AMYou stay classy Alvarado. Posted by: Jack at January 20, 2006 08:29 AMWould be kind of hard to press that they have it in for minorities when Jafer is on the ballot. Whom I would assume is muslim and/or black. NPR is still watching black helicopters fly over Austin :) Posted by: John at January 20, 2006 09:50 AModdly enough without being on the ballot, he has the same chance of being governor as any other person in the democratic primary. Posted by: Son of Adam at January 20, 2006 10:22 AMSo, he kited a check? Sounds like the good old days of the House Bank scandal in the early 90's when the Dems were still in charge. What was Felix thinking? Does he now have to pay a $20 hot check fee? Does this effect his credit? Why didn't he just sell his truck or something? Seriously, this is a sad and weak story. One of the worst. Posted by: Felipe at January 20, 2006 01:31 PMComing from a woman's point of view, the idea that Alvarado "intentionally" set out mislead Texans into believing he is something he is not is ludicrous. What people tend to forget is that politicians have personal lives just like the rest of us. Not sure what I'm talking about? Look at the actions of other politicians who have been arrested for DWI like Bustamante, the politicians who have made news by having affairs like Joe Barton. Let's look at Perry who had his own scandal just a couple of years ago where it was reported that his wife filed for divorce. Does anyone know if Alvarado has done of these things? A Veteran, A Teacher, A Man with flaws. So what? He's human and he deserves respect for simply trying to do what so many minorities only dream of doing, standing up for Texans. He did not fail at this because he bounced a check. He did not fail at all. I'm sure he will be back and I hope he does. Gail. Posted by: Gail at January 20, 2006 05:41 PMGail, I absolutely agree with you. Felix deserves better than this snarky treatment from members of the "I'm purer than thou" purported members of the Democratic party. In fact, I'm very disappointed (read: disgusted) at the tone of some of the posts who think this a personal issue. It's a symptom of the disease we seem to have..... mistakes are pointed out with snide comments, honest effort is held up to ridicule and the truth is turned on its head by those who don't know the difference between the truth and spin. Wake up and smell reality folks, 'cos this kind of nasty reaction stinks. Posted by: progressive Dem at January 20, 2006 06:11 PMThis is a public not personal issue. What kind of an idiot would pay to run for Governor using a worthless check? If this guy can't be honest and write good checks why in heavens name do we employ Felix as a school administrator in Texas? How can he help students when he is incapable of running his own life? The fact that the information about his bounced check was made public today, 18 days after he filed, makes it obvious the Texas Democrat party leadership was trying to hide this information and make their own decision about whether Felix should run or not. They would have known the check bounced in 4 business days. Posted by: Royal at January 20, 2006 07:46 PMPerhaps it is the kind of idiot who doesn't mind educating your child Royal (if you reproduced). You know it has to take an idiot to educate our children. As a previous educator, I've been disgusted by the way people like you think educating children is so easy. The idea that educators are not being supported by the worthless Governor we have cuts as deep as remarks from people who take advantage of how hard a teacher works. Educators spend most of their income buying supplies that the district can't afford. If Alvarado didn't have "time" to campaign or fix his issues because he was putting his job, educating our children, first then good for him! As for your "incapable of running his own life" remark, grow up. If your life is 100 percent perfect, you're dreaming. Also, why blame the democratic party for taking 18 days to move on this, geez, what part of the jetsons do you live at? Things don't happen quick and easy just because you want them to be. Royal, what make you imagine you know the real story? Oh, you read it in the newspaper...... No, you talked to somebody who talked to somebody who heard from somebody.... ad nauseum. Felix Alvarado is an honorable man and worth our respect for want to work for a better Texas, you seem to be much ....less. Am I jumping to conclusions about you? Well maybe, but you see, I talked to somebody who talked to somebody who heard from somebody.... Posted by: progressive Dem at January 21, 2006 01:07 AMI think Royal is just bummed because he just laid out this huge "expert analysis" about the election, in which Alvarado won. Really, he has nothing against Felix, so much as he's pissed that his insight was so completely off the mark. Also -- whoever thinks the Democratic party would have noticed a check bounced in four days is ridiculous. They spent the first week just celebrating the fact that they got a check at all. Ba-zing! Posted by: txgirl at January 21, 2006 01:34 AMTeaching is one of those professions that very few desire to go into. Though a terribly underpaid profession, it is still an honorable profession. Mr. Alvarado did not quit teaching, though he was running for governor. His job is very important, but more important are the students in his charge. Change during the middle of the year is never good for the sudent. The fact that Alvarado, a VP was willing to challenge the status quo no doubt will leave an impression on many of his students. The fact that he was disqualified, for any reason, other than criminal behavior, is what should be questioned, because writing a check that comes back with NSF, does not make one a criminal, otherwise a good majority of the population would have a criminal record. Say you never found out about the situation, would you support Alvarado? Or, what if Alvarado just withdrew, because of an NSF, but you never found out about it, would you support Alvarado? Had you heard of Alvarado before the NSF? Without knowing the details, you can speculate till hell and back. I only saw 13 candidates challenging Perry, and four of them are Perry incognito. Let me see the rest of you attempt to challenge a system that runs like fifty years ago. Alvarado was willing to take on a giant, with a sling shot. However, many could not get past the money. How many other candidates were removed for bad checks? As the only Hispanic candidate willing to stand up and be a voice, for the minority, for the poor, for the disenfranchised from the political process, (Which is everybody, because all career politicians want your vote, not to represent you. Cynical but true.)with little support of any kind, then as apathetic citizens, we get what we deserve. People are more willing to talk, talk talk but less willing to walk the talk. They will support, and probably vote for the candidate with the best marketing stategy. eh! that is just politics as usual. Posted by: IAM at January 21, 2006 09:27 PMAlvarado's campaign continues to make comments/remarks irrelevant to his actions. This is not about being a minority or a majority. It is not an attack on the excellent educators that Texas takes pride in. The recommendation that his campaign should put a cork in it stands for many Texas citizens. If this continues, as a Alvarado supporter, I will disassociate myself from him and his sister as well. It is a shame that his staff's comments will directly affect Ms. Alvarado's campaign for Lieutenent Governor simply because his staff has a chip on their shoulder and won't mature. I am curious to know if they have contacted Ms. Alvarado at all to help her with her campaign or if this has caused family conflict. Not having heard/read anything from the Maria Alvarado campaign says more than anything. She's learned one important thing about being a politician, that being a politician comes down to what you say and who you say it to, and sometimes saying nothing makes you look better than spitting out stupidness. For now, Maria Alvarado is the best option we have to get Republicans out of Democratic turf. So, Ms. Alvarado, if you are out there, can we still count on you to fight for LG in November? Posted by: TxDemMan at January 22, 2006 05:14 PMHEY! TxDemMan, you do not represent this Texan citizen, I have my own voice, and I surely would not make a decision about whether to support a candidate based on media reports. It might be a source, but I think, there are much better siurces not to support any candidate (new or old). There are plenty of people who support Delay, and Ruben Hinojosa. Hinojosa's brother, read the guardian, got sentenced for some criminal activity. I cannot remember the last time I believed anything that appeared in a newspaper, especially commentary, or editorials. You have just exposed the real problem with Texas politics. Figure it out! Does anyone know if info that goes out on yahoo groups is distributed through the entire internet, or just to members? Posted by: IAM at January 23, 2006 08:15 AMI was just looking at Alvarados website, Is I A M, the campaign manager for Alvarado? Posted by: txdemman at January 23, 2006 06:49 PMPost a comment
