November 29, 2005The Craziest HD-48 ScenarioBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanThere will be a lot going on behind the scenes in the next few days. There is some talk about consolidating the field and having one person run. This is the process that will happen this spring that you all should be aware of, as I understand it. The January Election is an open free for all election. All Republicans and Democrats run against each other. The top 2 go to run off in February. The winner of all that then is the State Rep for the Spring Special session that will likely be called for March-June because of the school finance ruling that set the June 1 deadline or else schools shut down. BUT There is still the regular primary in March which will decide the nominees for the November general election. SO Say it is Bentzin (R) Howard (D) Brown (D) & Rider (D) They duke it out in the open special, winner wins. They all could potentially run again (and have new challengers) in their party primaries in March. So given that, the following is actually a possible scenario. January Open Special Election: Bentzin & Brown go to run-off I'm not saying this is in the cards, but Rick Perry's election date enables this to be a possibility. And remember, Travis County officials estimate the election will cost as much as $250,000, plus another $125,000 or more if there is a runoff. Rip Avery has some thoughts as well. However many Democrats end up challenging Bentzin, it needs to be clear that Bentzin is not good for the district. As "Spanky" pointed out, someone who puts education first needs to be elected. Bentzin is a pro-voucher guy that took money from TAB/TRMPAC in 2002. We don't need him in there, voting along with the Craddick/Perry machine, to further ignore the improvements that need to be made in the public school system. Also, this election is going to cost Travis County $125,000 -- twice that if there's a run-off -- just to hold the elections. That's according to the press conference Senator Barrientos and the chair of the Travis County Democratic Paryu, Chris Elliott, had a while back. Why Perry was willing to call one for Baxter's seat, but not for Moreno's, is a question we need to get some reporters to ask, as well... Posted by: gary at November 29, 2005 12:53 PMGary is right. A candidate whose commitment to public schools is unquestioned is the best bet for Democrats. That's Donna Howard, a former Eanes school board member and longtime -- and consistent -- public schools advocate. Bentzin is a disaster. Kathy Rider's commitment to schools only surfaces when she's on the ballot. Andy Brown is about 10 years ahead of his time. Kelly White is a bigger disaster than Bentzin. Posted by: Seth at November 29, 2005 01:41 PMSeth is right-on. A close friend and life-long Republican in Westlake has said that she was impressed with Howard. The ability to cross party lines means something and this election will be about education. Howard is THE best shot to get the seat against Uncle Moneybags Bentzin. Posted by: Spanky at November 29, 2005 01:49 PMThe $125,000 on the runoff just shows how expensive it is to continue our standard plurality-runoff system rather than one of the ranked choice voting systems (IRV, Condorcet, etc.) Posted by: chrisken at November 29, 2005 09:49 PMPost a comment
