October 04, 2005Everybody Loves Poll Numbers ***UPDATE***By Damon McCullarThe WSJ has a poll out for the Texas governors race and senate race. Interestingly, in the senate poll they left out the only declared Democratic senate candidate, Barbara Radnofsky. Why they included Kirk Watson, who is running for STATE senate and John Sharp, who has never been interested in running for senate as far as I know. Here are the numbers: Rick Perry 40.1% Carol Keeton Strayhorn 34.6% KBH 50.4% KBH 51% The margin of error of this poll was 2.9%. I dunno what to make of this poll. They left out Felix Alvarado and Barbra Radnofsky. Why they aren't polling all of the declared candidates, I can't fathom. I find it interesting that Kinky "I out raised Chris Bell 2:1" Friedman is polling 10% behind Chris. It's a mystery! I'm sure the Kinkster can get to the bottom of it. Seems that Chris Bell is making strides toward the governor's mansion. A 13% behind one year out from the election is a respectable place to be. Assuming the name ID problem resolves itself, Chris should be in the thick of things in a year, assuming he's the nominee. The Chris Bell Campaign had this to say on their blog:

Time for the spin and counter-spin. GRUBE & SNOOKS: If a Dem can only beat an independent by 10% what does that say? DAMON & MARIA: Those people that are getting excited about Kinky will have to turn somewhere when he doesn't get on the ballot. SNOOKS: BLAH BLAH for 3000 words. DAMON: DOn't you have anything to do Snooks? GRUBE: Let her talk, don't be a woman. DAMON: Grow Up; GRUBE: You Grow up. RICK PERRY:I can't believe 40% of the people would vote for me again. Posted by: matth at October 4, 2005 08:56 AMMatt, I just love your Fozzie Bear impersonation. Posted by: Marie at October 4, 2005 09:18 AMIn other poll news, the Astros are picked by 6 out of 16 ESPN experts (37.5%) to win the World Series, putting them in a tie with the Angels. Jason Stark has an article explaining why he thinks the Astros will go all the way. Go to www.espn.com for that story. (Yeah, I might not be real focused on politics for the next few weeks. Get ready for a lot of baseball playoff updates, and possibly even a Bill Simmons-like rant at some point. Sorry, everyone). Posted by: Phillip Martin at October 4, 2005 09:36 AMWhat's up with a 3:oo game. I've got work, damnit. Now I've got to listen to the game. Posted by: matth at October 4, 2005 09:49 AMThanks for saving us the time and effort Matt. I really appreciate it. Posted by: Damon C at October 4, 2005 09:51 AMI don't get the Fozzie Bear crack. And Hardigree, funniest parody of BOR comments ... EVER. If anyone is interested (and between you and me, I can tell that you are but are scared to admit it. It's OK, let it out) here's what we have to say about the poll: http://www.chrisbell.com/blog/100405_striking_distance Posted by: Jason Stanford at October 4, 2005 09:53 AMMatt, you are remarkable. Thanks for saving everyone's time. Posted by: nadia at October 4, 2005 10:22 AMBut still, my head is spinning after your spinning Damon. No one can do it like you can. Posted by: Karl-T at October 4, 2005 10:45 AMThis poll is a joke. It is a Zogby INTERACTIVE Poll - in other words, an online, interenet poll. So it excludes everyone without a computer. Zogby then calls 2% of the respondents to confirm the results. These polls are notoriously inaccurate. Remember, Zogby predicted a Kerry victory on the eve of the election last year. Posted by: Aaron at October 4, 2005 10:58 AMKind of a drag about missing Pettite pitch the first game due to work, but if they do make it to the WS, I'm not coming to the office when they play during the day. The stros definitely seem to be the trendy pick to win it all, although I still think the Cards are the team to beat (Pujols=Astros killer). Thanks for the link to Stark's story. It kind of gives one chills, especially the possibility of Bagwell coming up in a Gibson-esque position. All this excitement, and I'm actually Rangers fan. Oh yes, and that poll seems screwy. Posted by: trza at October 4, 2005 11:10 AMboys boys boys. can't you just admit it, there is a Democrat running and it is about F*&%ing time you supported him. So either back off and take a seat or step up and help elect a democrat. If you take the first option, I have no time for you and if you take the second then welcome aboard. Other than that, lets work together rather then critizing anyone who has the balls to run. Posted by: katie at October 4, 2005 12:03 PMIn three words, not 3,000, no Barbara Radnofsky? That is not a poll. That is a joke. Which is what some consider the WSJ to be. This poll will only serve to bolster that opinion. Posted by: Baby Snooks at October 4, 2005 12:36 PMI agree that the Radnofsky thing is strange. At best this shows that people take Kinky seriously, people seem to know who Chris Bell is and Rick Perry is in a fairly bad position for a 6-year incumbment. Posted by: matth at October 4, 2005 01:44 PMGood one Hardigree, good one. Posted by: Grube at October 4, 2005 02:38 PMI know I put up a post on baseball, but I was wrong about some of it and changed my mind on other points. I'd say that Houston has a really strong chance going into the NLCS. I think they can beat Atlanta, but it will probably take 4 or 5 games. St. Louis, on the other hand, should dispatch of San Diego in 3 games. The extra rest for St. Louis' rotation and hitters could be enough to buy them some power against Houston's ace rotation and bullpen. If Houston goes 3-0 against Atlanta, watch out for a pennant in the Bayou. In the AL, I'd say that the Angels have as good a shot as anybody against New York. NY will have to face late day starts that make Angels Stadium hard to hit in. Los Angeles has also had the ability to lay up for a week or two while NY was going down to the wire against one of the best teams in baseball. I think Los Angles wins that series. Boston versus Chicago will be a tough one. Passable pitching and unbelieveable hitting (Boston) versus very good pitching and good hitting in Chicago will make this an interesting series. I'll go ahead and pick Boston for no other reason than that they are my favorite team and I think they can peel one off at Comiskey (I know its name changed, but I refuse to call it by whatever bastardized corporate bullshit they call it now) and then both at Fenway to take the series. Boston versus Los Angeles should go to the Sox. Boston and Houston. I'll be on the short end of the stick around these parts on that one, but at least I'll be happy to see Bagwell, Biggio and the rest of them get the shot at a title they deserve. Posted by: Andrew Dobbs at October 4, 2005 03:38 PMOh, Dobbsy. You fairweather fool, you. Welcome aboard the bandwagon! We've got as much baggage up here as the folks in Boston and Chicago, just not quite as much media attention. Don't you worry, though. Me, Matt, my Dad, and all the rest of us unwavering Astros fans will tell you all about our history as the postseason continues. Meanwhile, glad to have you on board. Posted by: Phillip Martin at October 4, 2005 03:52 PMBraves in 4/5 over the Astros. Young, fresh bats beat old, tired arms. Or at least that's my mantra until Clemens spanks 'em. And if I'm wrong, I take my crow medium rare. Posted by: Cincinnatus at October 4, 2005 05:13 PMKatie, next time there is a placeholder candidate like Rhett Smith running, I'll be sure to throw your words back at you. I have no interest in blindly supporting any Democrat, certainly not until after the primary, just because they are running. I hope you give $2000 to Van Os, Radnofsky, Karen Felthouser, and ever other single democrat running across the state, serious or not, winnable or not, because you shouldn't be critical of them and should be F*#&ing supporting them.
