August 15, 2005Buzbee for Lt. Gov?By Andrew DobbsI'm baaack... sorry I haven't blogged in a while--things have been rather busy with me between work, family stuff, moving and getting ready for classes. I'll try and let my words fill all of your lives more often, as I know most of you don't know what to do without me... ;) Anyways, I'm back because the first major Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov. has seen his name in the papers today. Friendswood attorney Tony Buzbee--2002 candidate for State House, former Galveston County Chair--was reported in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to be considering a run for the most powerful position in Texas politics.
Tony Buzbee, a 37-year-old lawyer and former chairman of the Galveston County Democratic Party, said the state's GOP leaders are spending too much time fighting among themselves and too little time solving problems like school finance. So he was receptive when some Democratic elders approached him a few weeks ago encouraging him to run for statewide office. "I'm looking seriously at it, but I haven't said yes or no," said Buzbee, a former Marine Corps captain who led troops in combat during the Persian Gulf War. "I really don't like the way our state is being run right now, and I believe that those of us who have made something in our lives need to be willing to give something back." The son of a butcher and a school cafeteria worker, Buzbee has made millions of dollars representing injured workers suing big companies and was named one of the top five commercial litigation attorneys in the state in 2003 and a "rising star" in 2004 by Texas Monthly. Buzbee is one of the most exciting trial lawyers in the state--having risen to the level of superstar in just a few years. Smart as a whip, an A&M grad, Marine officer, with money to spare; he could be a very good candidate. He lost his only other run for public office in 2002 when Larry Taylor poured more than $50,000 of TRMPAC money into the race. It is good to see more Democrats lining up to run statewide, especially in the less-than-glamorous offices. I don't support Mr. Buzbee or any other candidate at this point, but here's hoping he runs and many more after him. Posted by Andrew Dobbs at August 15, 2005 01:34 PM | TrackBackComments
whatever happened to john sharp? is he going to run for governor or not? and has anyone heard what paul hobby is doing these days? Posted by: lonestar liberal at August 15, 2005 02:01 PMThey are probably supporting Kinky Friedman like the rest of us. Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 15, 2005 02:05 PMDude, Dobbs just used an emoticon. Anyone else find that hilarious? LOL, ROFL, LMAO can only be next. Posted by: matth at August 15, 2005 02:24 PMDobbs, you the man. I've been waiting to hear who was lining up for the "power behind the throne" spot, sounds like Mr. Buzbee is a helluva a guy. Good to see you back, bk Posted by: Bill at August 15, 2005 03:13 PMI know of Buzbee. He was in charge of our Senate District during the last Democratic Convention in Houston. He is incredibly dynamic. He is a great speaker, and makes a great appearance. I hear that he has a beautiful family. I would definitely support him and I think that if people got to know him they would be really excited. Posted by: chris at August 15, 2005 04:22 PMThis is Charles Soechting, I hope that all of you are doing well. First, Tony is not only smart, articulate, but also a fighter. The ticket is coming together. Candidates have been holding back because they know that their timing is important, notwithstanding how much a lot of would like to see the announcements coming daily. They are coming but at a pace that the candidates think is the right one. Let's talk about the Lt. Gov's race! Dewhurst has been MIA, AWOL(Leadership) and will probably be challenged in the Republican Primary by none other than a rich oilman from Midland--NOT Craddick. Two guesses. Let's all encourage Tony to get into this race--I have. He is smart, articulate, HONEST, blessed with a wonderful family and ready for this race. Democratically, Charles Posted by: CHARLES SOECHTING at August 15, 2005 07:20 PMYou mean the Republicans don't like Dewdrop either? Maybe cute and rich just doesn't cut it any more. Some appear to object to Tony Buzbee because he is "unknown" but there really is nothing wrong with an "unknown" who nonetheless has been active politically as Buzbee has. Dewdrop was unknown. And is still unknown. He was also not really politically active. And it shows. Charles, I'm glad you have the time to post on a blog but don't have the time to do an interview with Rumbo. As a result, Tina Benkiser of the GOP got a full page interview and photo spread in the fasting growing Hispanic newspaper in this state without equal time for the Democratic Party. That's a great way to treat a base constituency of the Party. Nice going. Posted by: Jobu at August 15, 2005 09:34 PMMaybe he was too busy trying to find someone to challenge Chris Bell? Quietly of course. Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 15, 2005 10:09 PMWhen the Demo Chair spends time touting a Demo candidate before a primary on a Demo blog...say goodnight Gracie...This party is over. Posted by: Dos Centavosforu at August 15, 2005 10:11 PMI missed something? I didn't see him touting a candidate. Only suggesting someone become one. Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 15, 2005 10:19 PMwhats your email adress bro? i can't get my adress book to work. yahoo africa sucks. holler at me if you get a chance. just shoot me an email i guess.
