Former Congressman Charlie Wilson Passes Away in Lufkin

by: Todd Hill

Wed Feb 10, 2010 at 02:22 PM CST

Charlie Wilson, the charismatic East Texas Democrat who represented Congressional District 2 for twenty-four years, died today at a Lufkin Hospital as reported by the Lufkin Daily News.

You'll recall that Wilson was the subject of a book and movie starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts entitled Charlie Wilson's War.  This movie depicted the behind the scenes CIA Operative work that Wilson organized to help fund the Afghan Mujahideen resistance to the Soviet Union during the 1980's.

In 2008 I had the opportunity to meet former Congressman Wilson at the Texas Values in Action Coalition's Rayburn-Johnson dinner.  Wilson had the packed ballroom of over 500 people rolling in laughter as he told tales of his East Texas upbringing, his first political campaign, and chided Democrats to stay focused and "declare war" against our political opponents.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to talk with former Republican Congressman Bill Archer---the namesake of the Archer Fellowship program for which I have the opportunity and honor to serve in this semester here in Washington DC.  Congressman Archer had nothing but high praise for Wilson, despite his "entertaining" past, and commented at how remarkable it was that Charlie was able to do what he did in arming the Mujahideen with little to no one knowing it was occurring.

Charlie Wilson was 76 years of age upon his passing and had undergone a number of operations on his heart, including a transplant in 2008.  We'll update this post as more information and tributes become available. Please send them to us here at Burnt Orange Report. In the meantime, please feel free to add your thoughts and memories to the comments section of this post as well.

Update: Statement from Bill White

My friend Charlie Wilson was bigger than life, brought joy to all those who knew him, and was the kind of steadfastly loyal friend you'd want in a fight. He cared deeply about passing freedom down to the next generation and was a true public servant in the military and in Congress. Charlie helped move our state and our country forward. We lost a true Texan today.

More tributes are below the fold.  Click here.

Retired Texas Supreme Court Justice, and former congressman Bob Gammage had the following to say about Charlie Wilson's passing:

We've lost a great friend, a unique American caricture, and a talented public servant. A true Shakesperian character; "we shall not look upon his like again."

TDP Chairman Boyd Richie:

"Many Texans like to think of themselves as larger than life, and Charlie Wilson truly was.  Although much was written about "good time Charlie", he was more than a good public servant - he was a great public servant.  Even Tom Hanks couldn't capture everything that was Charlie.

"In both Austin and Washington, Charlie represented his East Texas constituents with a commitment that was absolute and he always stood tall for Texas.  Whether he was standing up for Texans here at home or those serving in the far corners of the globe, he was a great asset to our state and nation and he will be missed.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

My condolences to the Wilson family. (5.00 / 1)
May former Congressman Wilson rest in peace.

RIP, Rep. Wilson (0.00 / 0)
It's a sad day when we lose anyone, but especially someone who so affected our lives on a daily basis. I would love to have picked Mr. Wilson's brain about a dozen or so foreign policy issues... We as a state have lost a great man, and one of the last true public servants around.

Hmmm (0.00 / 0)

So many stories are covering Wilson's bragging claim to have almost single-handedly helped get the funding to the Osama bin Laden networks so they could kick out the commies in Afghanistan.  Of course, Charlie's chickens came home to roost on 9/11.  I presume one reason he wasn't brought up on aiding and abetting charges by the Republicans is that no one actually believes his tale (and of course because Reagan and daddy Bush also enthusiastically supported bin Laden at the time).

Just a minor detail... (0.00 / 0)
The reality is as soon as those nasty old commies were thrown out of Aghanistan we left Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban.  And Osama bin Laden.

Little Miss Muffet, aka the Mistress, Joanne Herring has of course reminded us all that the Republicans were just as supportive of our efforts in Afghanistan.  Maybe she shouldn't have reminded us. But she did. And while the Democrats, possibly including Charlie Wilson although he was working with the CIA, may not have known what the real agenda of the CIA was, think Enron pipeline to transport Russian oil and gas to India and bypass the Persian Gulf, the Republicans at the time probably knew full well about the agenda. And probably also knew full well about Iran-Contra. While they were acting just as shocked as everyone else.

Just the same I think the world would have been better off had we minded our own business.  The warlords would have driven the Russians out. And then taken care of the Taliban. And Osama bin Laden.

Sometime I just really like your shit, Baby (0.00 / 0)
Good article here about that:

Robert Herring -- Joanne's husband in 1978 -- founded HNG, which later became Enron. James Baker III had a little hand in here a bit later, as Reagan's chief of staff. And then of course there was Bob Gates, who was high-ranked in the CIA in the late '70's.

The Twisted Tale of the Snakes and Snake Charmers... (0.00 / 0)
After a studio screening of Charlie Wilson's War, when asked by the producers what he thought of the movie, one Afghan gentleman replied, "That asshole destroyed my country." But then, that's what the Pakistanis were paying him for.

______________________

Charlie Wilson's War was and is the biggest bunch of bull ever written for the screen and the worst indication of what was coming was the producers cowtowing to Little Miss Muffett who threatened to sue them all if they didn't present her as Little Miss Muffett. Of course watching the film even with the "changes" one wonders what her definition of Little Miss Muffett is.

There is some truth to the Pakistani connection but of course that connection is with regard to the oil and gas of the entire region. And the planned pipeline to the Indian Ocean. Which eventually will be built. Once we get rid of Little Miss Muffett's "freedom fighters.

The tale of the snakes and the snake charmers. Begins in the early 1950s with the rise and fall of Mossedegh in Iran which coincided with the fall and rise of the Shah.  At the skillfull hands of the CIA of course. From that point, in the entire region there has been the tale of the snakes and the snaker charmers. No one really knows who was which. Although some have been both.

The Democrats should learn that when the Republicans start screaming about "democracy and freedom" what they usually are seeking to liberate is a country's oil. Not its people.

Listen. Even Charlie said (0.00 / 0)
"we f--ked up the endgame." So don't lay 9/11 just at his feet, OK?

Charlie and John Murtha (RIP) and a handful of other House Democrats contributed more to the downfall of the USSR than Ronald Reagan ever did. If the GOP had gotten its way we would have followed the script in Revelations.
