Austin Progressive Coalition Endorsements

by: Michael Hurta

Sat Feb 06, 2010 at 04:32 PM CST

The University Democrats (UDems) and the Central Austin Democrats (CAD) got together today for their endorsement meeting.  Most of the candidates in contested Democratic races showed up, along with some other Democrats without contested primaries.  Together, they form the Austin Progressive Coalition (APC), which endorses candidates when the two groups concur on a particular race.

The Austin Progressive Coalition will combine efforts to make door hangers for the candidates the two groups endorsed.    Block walks are scheduled for each of the three Saturdays after today.  So, the APC endorsements could make a significant difference in the close races, such as the County Commissioner's race.

In that race, actually, Raul Alvarez continues to pull out close victories in club endorsements.  I can count today's combined margin of victories for him on one hand.  But now he has many clubs putting out his name, and that will make it one of the races to watch on primary night.

Beyond that, there really were no surprises.  Last week, KT noted that the Austin Democratic Machine is still figuring out where it stands in the 299th District Court race.  She's become a pretty good friend of the University Democrats, though, and I imagine my group will be out block walking for her in the likely event of a runoff.

KT mentioned that the Machine doesn't seem to care about the Lieutenant Governor's race but in reality there just seemed to be a lot of strong support for both Ronnie Earle and Linda Chavez-Thompson in both groups, resulting in this split endorsement.  (It makes sense, too, that the college club is the one to break away from Earle, as many of us weren't in Travis County to watch Earle's District Attorney leadership.)

For Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1, Yvonne Williams is still winning a majority of endorsements, but Daniel Bradford is picking up the young crowd.

And Farouk Shami had virtually no support.  Bill White received every single vote with the University Democrats, and Shami may be able to say he had one with the Central Austin Democrats.  Paraphrasing what someone said after the endorsements, even with some folks that may have felt sympathetic to Shami, "We can be realists from time to time."

Lt Gov rant (4.00 / 2)
Does it irk anyone else that we have two great candidates for Lt Gov and not EVEN a placeholder for Comptroller.

Of course I'm not saying one of them should have run for Comptroller, both of them are better suited for Lt Governor and I'm enjoying actually having a contested primary between two good candidates in statewide office.

I was thinking today about who would win between the two of them and think that Chavez-Thompson has the upper-hand because of what happened in 2006. If a pathetic candidate who is Hispanic woman like Alvarado can win the Lt Gov nod, then a good candidate like Chavez-Thompson should be able to do so much easier (though I think I will be voting for Earle myself).

Well if we're going to play the "shoulda" game (0.00 / 0)
I think many can agree that Ronnie Earle would have been better spent running for Attorney General. More name recognition than Radnofsky(did i spell that right or did i switch around a few consonants?) and from what I saw at the APC forum today, he knows how to stir people who want to vote democratic, but aren't convinced by hispanic surnames or labels such as "the anointed one"(as further evidenced by the fact that he's been putting up a good fight against Bill White's hispanic placeholder, LCT). I never really knew anything about Earle before the past two months, other than the whole Delay thing, but I've liked everything I've seen so far.

And poor Linda...She's a very nice lady, I've met her on multiple occasions, and she's giving it her darndest, but Dewhurst is going to mop the floor with her. It's as if God got the demeanor of Betty White and put it into an hispanic Estelle Getty's body. I'll still vote for the little Golden Girl come November, but the poor thing doesn't stand a chance.

Stonewall Dems (0.00 / 0)
Speaking of Linda Chavez-Thompson, does anybody know why she didn't return the Stonewall Democrats questionnaire?

Out of curiosity... (0.00 / 0)
I am not sure on this, but how many years do we have to go to back to find a Travis County District Judge with such a short history of living in Travis County as Karen Sage has?  Have we ever elected someone to any county post that has been here for such a short period of time?

And you are...? (0.00 / 0)
You say "we" as though you are some sort of authority or a part of this community, but as far as I can tell, you joined BOR simply to attack Karen Sage using an anonymous nickname. That's not very cool, but I guess it is the standard campaign playbook, no?

Fact of the Matter (0.00 / 0)
After sitting through the whole APC candidate forum, I have concluded every candidate running for District Judge and County Court at Law are well qualfied professionally to be elected a judge. The main differences are their personalities, temperment, life experiences, and who their best buddies are. The final defining factor is who their team of political consultants are.

That's the defining factor? (0.00 / 0)

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.
