Republican National Committee Sends Out Fake Census Letter to Raise Money

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Thu Jan 28, 2010 at 04:08 PM CST

Wow. There's politics, there's dirty tricks in politics, then there's this. State Representative Aaron Pena sent out this like via his Twitter feed (which you can follow @AaronPena):

Take a look for it yourself -- and remember that Republicans will pull every horrible trick they can this and every election cycle. From Politico:

Officials of both parties are sharply criticizing a fundraising mailing from Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele they say could be confused with official correspondence regarding this year’s census.

The fundraising letter comes in the form of a “survey,” a frequently used device for partisan fundraising, but this one has a twist: Calling itself the “Congressional District Census,” the letter comes in an envelope starkly printed with the words, “DO NOT DESTROY OFFICIAL DOCUMENT” and describes itself, on the outside of the envelope, as a “census document."

A couple months ago, I attended a Texas House of Representatives Redistricting Committee hearing about the census, and what it means for Texas. At the meeting, I learned that $3 trillion is appropriated annually based on census data. States and counties budget their numbers based on the census, which makes an accurate count extremely important.

However, there has been a long-standing effort to improve census counts in Hispanic communities, especially in South Texas. As some of you may know, Univision is making an extended effort to have conversations about the census on all major programming, from nightly news to telenovelas. As Pena wrote online:

Working so hard here in South Texas on getting a good census count only to have these ill-timed tactics. What's next?

What's next, indeed.

Thanks, Phillip (0.00 / 0)
... for mentioning this prominently on the blog.  This is a tired old Republican trick -- they've used it before and will probably use it again.  I guess Michael Steele, with all his jive talk about a new day at the RNC, turns out to be just another hack for The Man.

The Census is very important.  We estimate that Travis County has left over two hundred million dollars in formula-driven dollars on the table because of the 2000 undercount.  I join BOR in encouraging everyone to participate and to get out the word.

Speaking of Dirty Tricks (0.00 / 0)
They must be having a lot of "camps," preparing for the cycle. Dirty tricks, Watergate-inspired, seem to be entrenched in Republican political DNA.

Louisiana Watergate?

4 suspected in 'Louisiana Watergate' had written on conservative ideology

12:00 AM CST on Thursday, January 28, 2010

Michael Kunzelman, Brett J. Blackledge, The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS - Four men accused of trying to tamper with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's office phones shared a common experience as young ideologues writing for conservative publications.

Federal authorities said two of the men posed as telephone workers with hard hats, tool belts and fluorescent vests, and walked into Landrieu's office in a New Orleans federal building Monday. A federal law enforcement official said Wednesday that one of the hard hats was rigged with a tiny camera. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The best-known suspect is James O'Keefe, 25, who posed as a pimp for a hidden-camera exposé that damaged the reputation of the liberal community-organizing group ACORN and made him a conservative darling.

I got one of these (0.00 / 0)
and I'm the Democratic party candidate for TX-10.  Just goes to show you that the most important part of that survey was the credit card contribution part and there is nothing the least bit selective about it.  I take these things with postage reply paid envelopes and mail the envelope back with a piece of scrap paper inside.  Costs them money and the Postal Service can use the money.  A whole bunch of the Medicare Advantage Plan rip-offs have gotten this treatment from me.

One of the tricks? (0.00 / 0)
I hope not. ;) But you really should watch out for them...they may try to bug your offices, too. I like your Web site and your bio.

Oh, my. I just found this, too, from 2005.

I have personal experience of Tom Delay's abuse of power. I was in charge of Environmental Compliance at NASA in Washington, DC in 1989, when I directed Johnson Space Center to use a type of equipment that would not damage the Earth's ozone layer in their project to replace the giant air conditioning equipment, there.

I promptly got a call from Tom Delay, who asked me to rescind that direction so that a business crony could bid on the contract with equipment that used a chemical banned by the Montreal Treaty to save the Earth's ozone layer. I refused. He called my then-boss, Dr. Howard Robbins, the Associate Administrator for Management, to overrule me.

Howard said it was my call. For the next two weeks, I received nearly daily calls from a Delay staffer insisting that I change my mind, and my boss got calls from Tom Delay asking for my removal. It didn't stop until I asked the staffer if he wanted to read about it in the Washington Post. I succeeded in standing up to Tom Delay, then, because he wasn't the House Majority Leader. I wouldn't have stood a chance, last month. I'm running for many reasons, not the least of them being the culture of abuse of power and corruption among the current Congressional leadership.

Thank you for running for Congress. We should never forget what it was like in 2005. This is a great story.

Yeah, Return the Mail to the RNC (0.00 / 0)
Make them pay.  Years ago, a friend claimed that he attached a wrapped brick to a mail-back envelope from a book club, and the post office accepted it as first class postage.  Even if this is another urban legend, it's fun to contemplate that outcome for the UNC: a ton of bricks.

This story sounds like it may have (0.00 / 0)
evolved from an actual occurrence.  For lack of a better term, some creative folks pulled off a sort of campaign "prank" during one of Bill Clements campaigns for governor.  Clements's campaign had distributed a bunch of self-addressed postage paid envelopes, which activists wrapped around bricks to mail back to the Clements office.  I believe some of our local activist legends in Austin were involved in the prank.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

The RNC knows it has big problems (0.00 / 0)
since it has to rely so heavily on dirty tricks and lies.

The dirty trick realm is becoming increasingly difficult for the GOP now in the age of You Tube, 24/7 cable news and the progressive blogosphere.

So sad, too bad for them.
