Statesman: Linda Chavez-Thompson Plans to File for Lieutenant Governor

by: Michael Hurta

Sun Jan 03, 2010 at 06:03 PM CST

Jason Embry with the scoop:
Linda Chavez-Thompson, a national leader within the AFL-CIO and the Democratic Party, plans to enter the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor on Monday, according to a source familiar with her plans.

She is expected to file Monday afternoon at state Democratic Party headquarters.

Her entrance into the race should make the Lietuenant Governor primary the most interesting and exciting for the Democratic ticket.

The governor's race has interesting potential, with Bill White's clout and money combined with Farouk Shami's money.  The race for the ticket's #2 is also set to see millions fly around, though, with Marc Katz claiming his family will pour a large cash pile into his candidacy.

But money isn't the only barometer for engaging elections; Katz may even turn into an afterthought.  With Ronnie Earle and Linda Chavez-Thompson, I expect a fierce battle for the progressive messaging mantle.  Remember, votes aren't bought; votes are corralled with policy ideas and leadership.  Chavez-Thomspon, the former AFL-CIO Executive Vice President, and Earle, the former longtime Travis County D.A., each have plenty of that in their own right.

Good to see a real primary. (3.00 / 1)
Looking forward to a good primary between Earle and Chavez-Thompson. Hopefully one of them will get 50%+1 though, so we can unite and run a full ticket in March.

Chavez Thompson brings much more to the ticket (0.00 / 0)
With a compelling personal story, organizational support from an almost certain AFL-CIO endorsement and the impact of Latino and women voters in the primary, Chavez Thompson has a clear advantage in March and brings much more to the ticket in November. We all appreciate Ronnie Earle's efforts as DA and his indictment (even without a conviction) of Tom DeLay, but outside of Austin, he has no name ID among rank and file voters and no real organizational base to bring to table.

Turnout is going to be critical in an off year election, and Chavez-Thompson is a perfect compliment for Bill White at the top of the ticket - a gifted organizer and speaker who can motivate base voters in major urban areas and South Texas.

This is fantastic! (3.00 / 1)
I will be thrilled to see Linda Chavez-Thompson enter the race tomorrow.  Texas Democrats are in desperate need of a compelling story at the top of the ticket, and I don't think that in the years I've been voting I've seen one as inspirational as hers.

As I have said, having multiple ethnic groups and sexes represented in our party process makes the Democrats look better in Texas. We finally have a few races that aren't all white dudes :)

I think this will be a good primary. (0.00 / 0)
Of all the major contests so far, I think the Lt. Gov primary has a real opportunity to be a great primary, with real ideas, debate, different styles and arguments for who would be the best candidate. Other than Katz, who may spend his own money like when he ran for Mayor of Austin and underperform expectations, at this point this appears to be a win-win for Democrats. If only all the statewide offices were that way!

Ronnie Earle (0.00 / 0)

I saw this question on DKOS about a week ago: how come Mr. Earle does not indicate that he is a Democrat on his website?

His spokesman said it was an "oversite" and would be corrected immediately. You decide: http://www.ronnieearle.com/

Makes me wonder if he thinks he can win the Democratic primary without campaigning as a Democrat.

Does not inspire confidence.

When did you change it?

You shoulld poll your readers (3.00 / 1)
on this race.

Yah, would be an interesting poll (0.00 / 0)
Though I think there is a large portion of folk who are very undecided.  I would lean towards Chavez-Thompson, but that's just because she is a female HIspanic with a good story and Earle is a white man.

I'd like to see a little bit of campaigning before I decide.  Those facts are a bit too little.

Good idea, but we need to wait a couple weeks (0.00 / 0)
I'd imagine -- given our large base of Austin readers -- that Earle would poll disproportionately well here, at least until there's a chance to compare the two a bit more.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.
