Larry Kilgore Withdraws from Governor's Race, Endorses Debra Medina

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Dec 15, 2009 at 03:53 PM CST

Larry Gilgore, former Republican Guberntorial candidate best known for his secessionist political stances, has announced he is withdrawing from this year's contest and throwing his support to GOP gubernatorial primary candidate Debra Medina. Kilgore received just over 50,000 votes representing less than 8% of the 2006 GOP gubernatorial primary vote, over 225,00 votes or 18.5% of the 2008 U.S. Senate primary vote against John Cornyn.

From Kilgore's statements in the last 24 hours he writes about why he's decided to make this move.

I, Larry Kilgore, officially withdraw from the Texas Gubernatorial race. Thank you campaign supporters for all your hard work. The campaign has always been about Texas Secession and not about me; therefore the campaign for Texas Secession has not ended. I will continue to work with others to protect individuals and local governments from US and Texas government oppression.

He then offered his official endorsement on Facebook, where he had gathered over 2,500 supporters.

Debra Medina - Please accept my endorsement. I encourage the 226,000 Republicans that voted for me in 2008 to vote for you. Your character and actions will restore honor to the office of Texas Governor.

Medina, with nearly 4,500 facebook supporters, hails from the more libertarian, Ron Paul, Tea Party wing of the Republican Party and is currently polling in the high single digits in available polling in the GOP gubernatorial primary- a margin that could be decisive in the larger race between Perry and Hutchison should it tighten in the coming months.

Debra Medina won't win the Republican nomination, with our without Kilgore's support. Maybe she should seriously consider going after signatures to found a Texas Tea Party with ballot access.

I was wondering how many Republicans are running for Governor.

Of course there is Perry, Hutchison, and Medina, but according to some online sources there are six people (seven before Kilgore dropped out) running for the R nomination.

I wonder if the Perry-Hutchison race gets close enough if the minors could force a run-off... A Democrat can dream.

Medina (0.00 / 0)
Medina actually makes sense on a few issues, so I wouldn't lump her in with the crazies. But I asked the campaign for s's and g's her stance on gay marriage, which of course she is against. I wished them good luck against Goodhair.

I have also had a local former elected official trying to get me to vote in the primary for KBH. I laughed at it the first time. Second time I politely said I was filing for precinct chair and couldn't play the primary game even if it helped get rid of Perry. Of course I also am an officer in a Democratic club that forbids such things. Alas KBH will have to convince her own party she is worth it.

What does Medina make sense on? (0.00 / 0)
She wants to get rid of property tax and have everything be funded by regressive sales tax.  She is obsessed with illegal immigration.  She wants "Washington" to stay out of healthcare and gets worked up about trumped-up states rights.  She is proud to be a "Tea Party" person.

...eminent domain and local control of schools. I didn't say everything she said made sense.
