Hank Gilbert Campaign Statement on Developments in the Texas Governor's Race

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 07:29 PM CST

Even with the withdrawl of Tom Schieffer and the pending official decision of Bill White on entering the Texas Gubernatorial primary, there remains other candidates in the race for Texas Governor. Of those, we've received the following statement from Hank Gilbert's campaign.

DALLAS--Vince Leibowitz, spokesperson for Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Hank Gilbert (D-Whitehouse) issued the following statement today in response to developments in the race for Governor:

"Hank thanks Ambassador Schieffer for his service to our country and for running. Hank appreciates the Ambassador's continued desire to serve our state and wishes him well in future endeavours.

However, a call to leave the Governor's race and endorse another unannounced candidate fails to resonate with Hank. He got in this race because he believed no one in the filed could both win and energize Democrats in order to help elect Democrats to downballot offices at all levels. That remains the case today. Hank is fully committed to this race and will see it through to an honorable conclusion."

Given the suddenness of today's developments, I don't expect Gilbert, Friedman, Alvarado, or Shami to come out today or anytime this holiday week with anything other than a "we are still in the race and evaluating all developments" until Bill White makes an official statement that he is in. So I'm not going to read too much into this statement from the Gilbert campaign as it would look weak to say anything different at this point.

Everyone is going to take the holiday week and weekend to have a lot of conversations- conversations with other campaigns, with donors, with staff, and with the party. Those will largely drive when and where existing candidates end up and if as of yet unannounced candidates will step forward to fill in the ticket .

I don't expect that Hank Gilbert will end up filing to run for Governor if Bill White files to run for Governor- it would be a waste of his talents and he wouldn't win the primary. Alternatively, if White successfully becomes the nominee, he could head a ticket that also elects Bill Moody to the Supreme Court, Jeff Weems to the Railroad Commission, and Hank Gilbert to either the Land or Ag Commission if he was the nominee for one of those offices.

If we think that a Democratic nominee can become Governor, then we should be acknowledging the fact that they are going to push along some of those downticket and historically better performing candidates. Gilbert should remember that, as he and Moody know this first hand when they led the ticket as the lead vote-getters in 2006 for statewide executive and judicial offices.

I doubt that the field will clear entirely for Bill White- that's asking a bit too much consensus and organization from Texas Democrats. But I do expect that with time and thoughtful evaluation, we will have a ticket we can be proud of in 2010.

Agree with waiting (0.00 / 0)
I'm glad Mayor White is holding off until next week to make any sort of announcement. Stirring the pot up now before the Thanksgiving holidays could ruin it for a lot of people. It's time to take some time and enjoy the holiday and the meaning of it. One week isn't going to win or lose the election in November or the primary in March.

Regarding the down ballot races I agree that this will provide a much needed boost to those races. It could also help start a movement to grow the party and build some succession paths in the party. As I've said all along, the current and rumored slate just didn't have the appeal of Mayor White for this slot.

But, all that aside, let's kick back and enjoy some turkey or tofu turkey (whatever your dietary choice may be) on Thursday and some good Texas-A&M football later that night. Hook 'em Horns!

I promise not to rant against the Wal-Mart haters this year also.

Dead on... (0.00 / 0)
Excellent analysis. Sadly, I'm afraid you're right that the field won't clear for White; we don't need a meaningless Democratic fight while the Republicans are engaging in a purifying blood bath.  And this is not written from the perspective of a big Bill White supporter - on the contrary, I have been quite critical and was likely to support Sharp.  However, the media has guzzled the Bill White Koolaid and, to have any chance to win in 2010, we have to have that kind of credibility at the top of the ticket.

A primary isn't meaningless (3.00 / 2)
I am interested in knowing the policy and personal differences out there among the candidates.  Further, a contested primary would increase voter turnout in the Democratic primary as opposed to the Republican primary, meaning that Rick Perry wins the Republican primary.  It's too early to assume that Kay Bailey Hutchison can't win the Republican primary just because she's staying in the Senate, and she would still be more formidable than Rick Perry in the general.

Yah, a good Dem Gov Candidate gives Hutchison a new playing Card (0.00 / 0)
KBH now can play the "electability" card if she wants to.  Not sure how effective it would be, but it's certainly something Rick Perry cannot play.

It's still likely that Rick Perry will win the GOP nomination, but it was once pretty darn likely that Kay Bailey would glide to a nomination herself.  We have a bit over three months left -- that's enough time for something to change.

Kinky and Farouk (0.00 / 0)
I think Kinky's in it for good.  I don't see him getting out no matter what the circumstance.

I am curious about Farouk, though.  I don't think any of us know Mr. Shami well enough to even begin to guess what his thoughts might be.  He wouldn't beat Bill White in a Gubernatorial race, but he would Force White to spend a lot of money that would be better used in a general election.

Farouk's the type of guy I'd rather see grow the Democratic party from the inside.  He could be a power player as a donor.  As a candidate, though, he's more likely to be a waste of time and money.

remember 2002 (3.00 / 2)
I don't recall Ron Kirk or Ken Bentsen getting out of the race they fought it out with Morales. Ron raised plenty of money for the general. Let the candidates run their campaigns and let the voters decide in March. Plenty of time for the general.

Diversity (0.00 / 0)
Not related to Hank Gilbert's announcement, but are there any major African-American and Hispanic candidates rumored to be considering running downballot yet?  Are there some announced already I just don't know about?  It seems like such a white (not a pun, lol) ticket so far.

Maybe, but not much (0.00 / 0)
I saw Richard Raymond's name listed.  I'm not exactly sure how Hispanic he is, but his middle name is Peña and he is a member of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.

raymond is hispanic (3.00 / 1)
i'm not sure what "how Hispanic" means...but i'm sure rep. raymond would say he's very Hispanic.

he IS Hispanic and represents the most Hispanic county in the country (Webb).

he ran in 98 and would be a great statewide candidate, but i've not heard any rumors that he might be going statewide.

yeah (0.00 / 0)
Not sure what "how Hispanic" is.  He's Hispanic, as Colin said he represents Webb county, he speaks fluent Spanish.

Pena is his mothers last name.  At least as far as my own Hispanic culture goes, you use your mother's name as well as your father's.  Before my last name is "Gonzales", but it isn't my middle name, it's still technically my last name.

As far as races go - his name was thrown out by Mann when the twitter "Dem ticket rumors" hit critical mass yesterday.  Raymond, like a lot of politicians, always has his eye on a higher office and doesn't mind his name being thrown out there.  Not sure there's much more to the rumors than that.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
I mainly said that because I know very little about Rep. Raymond's personal history, and if he runs on the ballot with the name "Richard Raymond," without the Peña, most people will think he's a white guy.

"How Hispanic" really just revealed my ignorance regarding Rep. Raymond.  I know about some of the great things he has done in the legislature, but I don't know about him.  For all I knew, he was only half or 1/4 Hispanic and exploiting that smaller part of his heritage.  I'm glad to see I'm wrong.  :)

Thanks for correcting me.

As far as I know, Rep. Raymond is using "Richard Pena Raymond" on everything including the ballot...but wasn't a few years ago, you are right.

No way should Hank drop out! (0.00 / 0)
First, White and his campaign has been unimpressive and he has wasted $2 million with nothing to show for it.  Think what Hank would have done with that $2 mil.  Second where does White stand on the issues?  He seems to change his spots a much as his mimi-me KBH does.  Tell the pols to stand down for once.

He must have done something useful with that money (0.00 / 0)
If memory serves me correctly, the few polls on the "Senate race" have shown a significant upward bounce towards the present for Bill White.

wrong Michael (0.00 / 0)
He has remained dead even with Sharp and Dewhurst in just about every poll.

From the Texas Tribune Poll (0.00 / 0)
I thought I read this:
Houston Mayor Bill White appears to have made some headway - he trailed John Sharp and David Dewhurst in June, and now runs neck and neck with Dewhurst at 13% (Sharp garners 10% this time around).

Yah, all three are within the marigin of error -- but I think that was the first poll I saw White with double digits.  He only really has name recognition in Houston, and it has probably grown since he started campaigning.

I'm not going too go into a lot of detail... (0.00 / 0)
... and I sure as hell don't want to wade into White v Sharp. It's the poll. That thing was trash. The Tribune shouldn't have run it. I honestly don't think there's any usable information in it.

[ Parent ]
Right, There are Differing Opinions on the Poll (0.00 / 0)
And while I have my problems with it, particularly on the Governor's race, I do think we can take some worth out of that poll.  There is workable methodology for online polls -- they are still probably the hardest to trust of all types of polls, but they are probably the future of polling.  We should at least be able to take a little from them now.

Method works for a wider sample (0.00 / 0)
If you're sampling the full population or a general electorate, RDD or structured online polls can be pretty good. Voters tend to exaggerate their intent to vote in the primary. I think the Tribune poll had 75% of the population claiming they would vote in the primary, which is just absurd.

[ Parent ]
White's campaign has been pretty good so far (0.00 / 0)
I'm not sure what kind of campaign White should have run to this point. He's been as aggressive as he can for a position that has yet to be vacated. If you consider that White is building a statewide ground operation ready for a full-scale launch I'd say he's getting ready for the big run when it's time.

Regarding issues I agree that Hank Gilbert has his positions lined up but he's not as solid as you might think. I heard him speak in San Antonio to a very small group of people and I feel he parrots progressive lines but doesn't really know how to execute. His education positions were simple and didn't have a lot of meat to them.

White, on the other hand, does have a solid grasp of a lot of issues. Regarding being wishy-washy I haven't seen that in him. I've heard him speak four times and have talked with him on most of those occasions.

Finally, for those who think he doesn't have the name recognition of the candidates he has more than everyone but Kinky. He also has more of a track record for voters to examine. The recent Texas Monthly article provides a good view into his time as Houston's mayor. If anyone can point to track record he surely can. That would hold well in talking to voters and in debates, something the others can't do.

I'd say we have a strong candidate entering if he does enter next week.
