TX-Gov: Haley Barbour Endorses Rick Perry

by: David Mauro

Thu Oct 29, 2009 at 09:57 PM CDT

Just a day after Dick Cheney endorsed Kay Bailey Hutchison, her opponent Rick Perry answered with the endorsement of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the chair of the Republican Governors' Association. Barbour was in Texas earlier today, appearing in Fredericksburg and Dallas, to announce the endorsement, according to the Statesman.

When Hutchison's campaign announced the Cheney endorsement, Perry's camp shot back with an attack on Hutchison's time in Washington.

“It’s not surprising, since they both worked in Washington for so long. Washington insiders stick together," said Perry spokesman Mark Miner.

Haley Barbour has been a Washington insider for over two decades. One of the most powerful lobbyists in Washington in the 1990s, Barbour served as chair of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997.

When Perry was by the Statesman asked whether he would rather having Cheney or Sarah Palin endorsing him, Perry, who is expected to campaign alongside Palin in January, answered as you might expected: "I think I'd stick with Sarah." Whether a parade of unaccomplished conservative govenors (sound familiar?) will help convince Texans to stick with Perry for a third term remains to be seen.

He is Governor of Mississippi and former RNC Chairman.

So, Perry is OK with Palin (0.00 / 0)

baggage?

Interesting.

It seems that there is a war going on within the Republican Party.   It is the neocon war mongering, so-called "moderates" vs. the right wing southern teabagging, racist, homophobic and xenophobic extremists.

Texas can choose its poison, I suppose.

What will it be?

Endless wars? Greed?

Greed, hate and intolerance?

All of the above?

One might be better off thinking outside a Republican box.

Didn't Perry once get in trouble for insulting Mississippi? (0.00 / 0)
I recall he was excoriated by the governor of Mississippi at that time, who demanded an apology.  I just did a cursory google search, but couldn't find exactly when that was or who was Miss. gov.  It would certainly be interesting if it was Barbour.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

Some of Barbour's roots were exposed this month when it was reported that a photo of Barbour is on the home page of the Council of Conservative Citizens, the racist group that is an offshoot of the old segregationist white citizens councils that tried to hold back the civil rights movement. The photo was taken at a county political barbecue. Barbour is pictured along with five other men, including CCC field director Bill Lord. The CCC gained notoriety in the mid-1990s when it became known that Trent Lott, the former Senate majority leader, also from Mississippi, had spoken before it. Nothing has changed about the CCC. Its website is full of direct links to blatant racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia.

The home page features an article titled "In Defense of Racism." The article maintains that "certain racial groups show a marked proclivity for physical violence. Generally, those racial groups possess lower IQs. . . . No amount of learning, welfare, affirmative action, or socialization will interfere with the behavioral response of lower IQ races. . . . Blacks, who are given to physical violence at a rate 50 times that of whites, Mexicans, and certain Pacific Islanders, are among these groups."

and it wasn't a "county political bbq", this was an event sponsored by the CCC, an off-shoot of the KKK.

I agree that Barbour will bring Perry about three votes total... (0.00 / 0)
That being said, I'm continually surprised that the "anti-Washington" sentiment that Perry and other freaks espouse can't be more successfully framed as an "anti-American" sentiment. Seriously.
