Dick Cheney to endorse Kay Bailey Hutchison

by: Todd Hill

Wed Oct 28, 2009 at 01:43 PM CDT

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, architect of the neoconservative democracy installation project in ancient Mesopotamia, will endorse Kay "will she or won't she" Hutchison for Texas governor.  This from the AP & Politico:

How much more fun could the Texas governor's race get?

The latest from AP:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will throw his support behind U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's campaign for Texas governor.

Hutchison's campaign confirmed Wednesday that Cheney will endorse the Texas Republican's March primary challenge of Gov. Rick Perry at a fundraiser next month.
Also striking that for all Cheney's national unpopularity, he's a clear plus in a Republican primary in Texas.

I wonder if Cheney will accuse Hutchison of "dithering" with Republican primary voters as she waffles back and forth attempting to decide if she wishes to retire to the Texas governor's mansion or retire to Washington D.C. till 2012.  As Kay 'dithers' on whether she will or won't be a senator anymore, mainstream Texans continue and suffer from crippling utility costs, dilapidated transportation infrastructure, and soaring health care costs. Hutchison knows she wants Cheney to help her raise money, but Kay 'dithers' on which career path best suits her interests.

Politico speculates that Cheney will be a plus for Hutchison and I fail to see that logic.  Kay is considered a moderate Republican and I would declare Cheney so far and extreme to the Right as he is teetering on falling over a cliff.  Maybe that earns her some cred with the baggers and birthers of the Texas voting public, but I would think it wounds her attempts to woo independents and disenchanted Republicans---all of whom she needs to defeat Perry in a primary.

I wonder if Kay will accept an invitation from Dick to go hunting in South Texas.

But it will help her (3.00 / 1)
I think it will help her, because the she will have to pull away some of the hard core conservatives to win the primary.  Her dithering combined with a microscope going over her have disillusioned many moderates who were thinking to go vote for her in order to get rid of Perry.

credibility (3.00 / 2)
She has no credibility until she decides what on earth she is going to do.

I would say a more powerful endorsement for either candidate is Sarah Palin, who endorsed Perry.

Trying to become Rick Perry at the last minute will guarantee that she loses.  Her path to victory was moderate Republicans and disenchanted Democrats and Independents.

The one person who could swing the vote one way or another for either candidate is probably Ron Paul.  I assume if he endorsed then it would be Medina.  If he did that I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility you have a Republican primary runoff.

So, the most unpopular (0.00 / 0)
neocon draft evading war hawk Vice President in modern history endorses Hutchison?  That should be an embarrassment.

thank you, Lord (0.00 / 0)
this race just keeps getting better.

i wish halliburton would re-hire cheney so he would stop trying so hard to be relevant.

after having a captive audience (literally) for 8 years, he just can't take it that no one cares anymore.

at least bush knows to keep his head down and mouth shut.  after the rogering the country took under them, i would never appear in public again.

stick to the country club circuit.

I hate to say anything good about Cheney, but he is smarter than Sarah Palin is. Or do I mean shiftier?  Neither is honest with others or themselves.

Perry and Hutchison are birds of the same feather (3.67 / 3)
We need a Democrat in office. The sooner the better.

If we get health care reform that includes a public option in which states can opt out, Texas will be screwed if a Republican is running the state.  Both Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison would opt out in a New York second.  Both are far too cozy with big insurance.  Both are pro business, anti-people.

Texas would get stuck with no choice, no competition and the ability of insurance companies to continue to deny treatment and rob us blind.  Residents of other states will have more choices and fewer costs.

Folks need to know this before going to the voting polls.  If one does not care about one's own self-interests, financial well being and overall health, vote for a Republican.

It will hurt her (0.00 / 0)
With Bush/Cheney gone Dem opponents have lost THE major campaign issue "Bush/Cheney".  Cheney reintroduces the issue.  NJ and VA Governor races may be foreshadowing what happens post Bush/Cheney

Cheney vs Palin (0.00 / 0)
I question how much pull Cheney has among the hardcore conservatives who vote in Primaries.  I do agree that Cheney's endorsement will hurt her over moderate Republicans and Independents, though.  It also make some Democrats think twice before voting for her over Rick Perry.

However, I think Palin is the stronger celebrity endorser in this race.  She seems to have more clout with teabaggers, birthers, and hard Republicans.  Probably because a lot of these people blame McCain, his campaign staff, and the liberal media rather than Palin over the 2008 loss.  In the long run, Palin's endorsement of Perry will probably garner more support than Cheney's endorsement of KBH.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I think your exactly right if you are going to measure endorsements as an indication of strength in the Republican primary.

I don't believe Cheney has much pull at all.  In fact, I would think that one would run for the hills if he said he would endorse them.  The reason Hutchison was so eager to embrace the endorsement, and promote it, is because she is desperate to look extreme Right---which is exactly the direction the Republican Party has headed in the last year.  She is desperately trying to be Rick Perry because, after all, being Kay Bailey Hutchison has caused her to spin her wheels for about a year.

The fact is that being perceived as a moderate Republican these days is a political death-nail.  KBH could have withstood that pressure, and frankly, built a whole new Republican Party had she quit her inherit talent to waffle and be indecisive.  KBH should have started building a new, mainstream Republican Party and actually running a statewide campaign about 9-12 months ago.  She is way behind the 8-ball and desperately trying to win by being something that she is not---extreme.

and serious baggage.

Too many potentials for scandals.

Either way, an endorsement from Palin or Cheney can't be good in the long-term.

Palin (0.00 / 0)
is still the darling of the GOP.  We all know that she has baggage and represents the lowest form of politician that one can create; however, Republicans hold her up as a goddess and savior of the dying GOP.  That's fine by me.

Both Cheney and Palin are pathetic.  I think it's great that Hutchison and Perry feel the need to throw these endorsements around and defend them.
