Kay Bailey Hutchison Waffles Again on Senate Resignation

by: Todd Hill

Tue Oct 13, 2009 at 02:47 PM CDT

(Please note the update to this story below. I have been of the same opinion as Todd since the summer that KBH isn't going to resign. This appears to becoming more true once again.   - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

An update to this story is below

Senator Kay "will she or won't she" Hutchison threw more fuel on the growing fire as to whether or not she will indeed resign her senate seat to pursue a full-time run for governor of Texas.

"I can't say anything right now because I don't know," Hutchison said. "Every day in Washington, some new bad thing is coming up."

Davis pushed further, asking if she might stay in the Senate through next year's March primary.

"Well, a lot of people are suggesting that," Hutchison said. "That's not what I want to do. That's not what I intend to do but ... right now I want to just see what comes next. When is health care finished? I want to stay and fight with every bone in my body against the government takeover of health care."

Hutchison was the featured guest of Right-wing conservative WBAP radio host Mark Davis this morning.

I've been one of the few who began to speculate back in the summer that Kay Bailey Hutchison may not resign her senate seat because she has been unable to build the necessary statewide infrastructure to challenge Rick Perry in the 2010 GOP primary.  Hutchison has not had to run a statewide campaign since 1993, whereas Perry has run statewide campaigns dating back to 1998.  Hutchison represents more of the moderate, yet dwindling wing of the Texas Republican Party, while Perry represents the extreme, Right-wing of the Texas Republican Party.  The latter votes in larger numbers than the former in Republican primaries here in Texas.  Hutchison has a lot going against her---much of which is her own fault.

Hutchison went on in her interview to suggest that there are a number of politicians beginning to be a bit upset that she is incapable of making up her mind as to whether she wants to retire to the Texas governor's mansion, or retire up in Washington until 2012:

Hutchison told Davis Tuesday it "bothers" her how many public officials' political plans are up in the air while they wait for her to step down.

Hogwash!  You love the fact that you have the whole wide world in your hands, Kay.  You love nothing more then having all these politicians pawing and begging for you to make up your mind. Hutchison will continue her half-hearted run for that retirement mansion in Austin, but she'll do it without resigning her senate seat.

UPDATE: POLITICO is now reporting an unnamed source within the Hutchison campaign as stating the following regarding distrust on the part of her campaign toward Perry appointing a suitable replacement for her in the senate:

A Hutchison insider told POLITICO that she "can't trust Perry to appoint a candidate who would hold the seat and represent the state at a desirable level."

The plot thickens folks!

Haven't we seen this dithering act (0.00 / 0)
before? Oh yeah, now I remember.

Kay Bailey is the Brett Favre of the US Senate.

OMG!  I hit the floor laughing so hard.

That is an excellent analogy.  KBH is the Brett Favre of the U.S. Senate.

May I use that?

Can't tell you how many times I've said this would happen.  Never for a minute did I believe she would quit her Senate seat.  And here we are the person that could have won the Governorship is running for the Senate seat that Hutchinson won't ever give up.  Played again.  Called it again.  Democrats get played again.  See ya, Mr. White.

Okay, I've had time to think it over... (0.00 / 0)
If we can get the vote out for Democrats....and if we can get Texans to understand how bad they have been played by the Republicans and if we can make it stick...We can get Bill White elected...Maybe it's just that I'm in a 90% Republican precinct, and in a county that has been Republican since the 80's.

Then it is Governor White (2.00 / 1)
Look, the dude went to the senate race because his moderate Houston supporters were committed to Kay. If she doesn't run, he transfers his large amount of money to a state race, no longer is limited to $2400 per donor, and can run on competence ("I'll enforce the death penalty, but I will not kill an innocent man.").

Either way, I like our chances.

that's 2 steps away (2.00 / 1)
KBH's comments are not about her not running for Govenor, they are simply about not resigning her Senate seat to do so.

I see White needing more certainty that KBH won't resign to move away from the Senate race.  He has been adamant that he would prefer the Senate seat, but things change if it becomes unavailble for two years.

It would also be curious to see how Sharp and White perceive KBH's chances of winning, should she not setp down from the Senate before the election.  Because if she steps down and wins the election, the special to replace her still isn't THAT far away.

White will not run for governor (0.00 / 0)
I don't think their is a snowballs chance in hell that White will ever run for governor.  I don't think he ever wanted to run for that position to begin with.  Everyone else wants him to, but he doesn't want to.

Why on God's green earth would someone like White, who is clearly a hands on leader that actually utilizes power for the common good, essentially become the Texas version of the Queen of England?  He would go from a mayor-dominated government system where the mayor has power versus a city manager, to a figure-head as governor.  That's not his style, and frankly, that would be simply a waste of good talent, skill, and leadership.

If KBH doesn't resign I believe White will hang on till 2012 and take her on at that time.  He is in the senate race to stay.

She may have a point here, knowing Perry, he would appoint someone like Larry Kilgore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...

See we had this conversation. She's not going to risk giving up her Senate seat and then losing the Election. We just need to make sure that were getting the Dems out to vote in force and get one of our own in there.
