Kay Bailey Hutchison Not 100% On Resignation, Hopes Perry Retires

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Wed Jul 29, 2009 at 06:02 PM CDT

Yes, No, Maybe So?Sen. Hutchison continued toying with our emotions this afternoon with a clarification of her comments earlier today, which of course, coming from Hutchison means that she's actually about to make things more confusing and ridiculous than they were before.

CQ Politics: First, she told a Texas radio interviewer that she intends to resign her seat in the Senate.

In Washington a short time later, Hutchison said she might stay in the Senate through next year's gubernatorial race and really didn't intend to indicate a change in her anticipated timetable.

Oh. My. God. Are you for real? ARE YOU FOR REAL?

Hutchison said her comments were meant to convey that she believed Gov. Rick Perry might -- and maybe should -- drop out of the race, given that it was "pretty unprecedented to have a governor trying to serve 15 years."

"I was trying to say that I stepped back once before," Hutchison said, referring to two occasions on which Hutchison has eyed and then backed away from challenging Perry. Hutchison said that "nobody expected [Perry] to run for 15 years, and I think there's a chance that he wouldn't run because he would see how divisive it is and that he's trying to stay too long and that he can really help in many ways if he doesn't run, in which case I could then be able to stay in the Senate all the way to the end."

Hutchison said her preference would be "to stay all the way through the election but for it being very difficult with the governor continuing to run."

"I was really trying to say to him he could step back here, and he's really trying to hang on too long and maybe he'll rethink," she said.

I swear to god, the only thing crazier sounding than Rick Perry actually stepping down as Governor to let Her Royal Cowardness just waltz into the Governor's office, is being deluded enough to believe that's a real possibility and then publicly stating it as your excuse and stepping all over your own media cycle.

Update: An anonymous source points out the perfect song to accompany this story.

Quit playing games with my heart
Before you tear us apart
I should've known from the start
Before you got in my heart

Baby, baby the love that we had was so strong
Don't leave me hanging here forever
Oh baby, baby this is not a lie, let's stop this tonight

Baby, quit playing games

This is becoming embarrassing (3.00 / 1)
These are unforced rookie blunders and they are coming like clockwork.

The saddest part is that our bench all decided to run for Kay's seat because they all figured she was a lock on the mansion.

Maybe (3.00 / 2)
They will cancel each other out. He's so vain. She's so vain. And then both of them being interviewed by the extraordinarily vain and know-it-all Mark Davis. It's an overdose.

These cartoon characters posing as serious politicians who go around stirring up publicity with very little interest in anything but their own political careers. Little Sarah Palins, all of them.

Surely, Texans have had enough of all these goofy Republican characters.

Enough already!!

Sarah Palins indeed (3.00 / 1)
Rick is doing what is best for Rick.  Kay is doing what is best for Kay.

Nothing else matters.

Don't (5.00 / 1)
Don't ever quote the Backstreet Boys on this blog again.

Talk about diluting your brand...

Ugh.

She's not going to resign (0.00 / 0)
How can she? It was one thing to resign the seat when all the polls showed her winning the primary. Now they all show her losing and the only leverage she has to raise money is her place in the Senate.  She would obviously like to figure out a way to not have to run for governor and quietly fade away but she's too far in now to let that happen and she has asked too many friends to put themselves on the line. Oh what a tangled web she weaves.

This is why I've always said (4.00 / 2)
I will believe it when I actually see a filing to run, and not one minute before.

Princess Sparkle Pony has made an entire career of smiling pretty and being a consummate political tease.

And this is the sterling candidate Bill White is rumored to have promised not to run against?

KBH has the whole wide world in her hands... (4.00 / 2)
I wrote last Monday about how I don't think she will resign.  If she does I won't necessarily be shocked, but I am quickly coming to the conclusion that she will remain a senator.

The biggest reason for that I believe is because she doesn't want Perry to have the power to pick her successor.  These two are about to duke it out bad, so why give him the satisfaction of filling her vacancy?  She still wants some control over who gets her seat should she win, and if she doesn't win, which her pathetic campaign indicates is highly likely, she keeps the seat.

KBH is not and never could run against Perry (3.00 / 1)
KBH and the Republicans have this down pat.  She won't run and give up her seat but she will hamper the only person that could have taken Perry out, Bill White.  I truely don't understand why Bill White is doing what he is doing, but I guarentee that Bill is going to be the big loser in the end.  If it's still possible, he should drop his bid for the Senate seat and go for the Govenorship.  I've said this so many times I know I must sound like a broken record...

Nope, you're absolutely right (0.00 / 0)
This ultimately is about certain Democrats letting themselves be boxed in by a false "bipartisan courtesy" that the Republican Party of Texas has long abandoned.

Except when it's useful for pressuring Democrats.
