Bill White Reports $1.8 Million for Filing Period (Updated)

by: Michael Hurta

Wed Jul 15, 2009 at 00:50 PM CDT

From Bill White's press release earlier today:
More than 3000 supporters have have contributed more than $4.3 million to Houston Mayor Bill White's campaign for U.S. Senate since he launched it, according to a report to be filed with the Federal Election Commission today.

The contributions for the filing period ending June 30th totaled more than $1.8 million, with more than $1 million raised. The candidate made a donation and matched all June contributions for a personal total of $821,000.

Campaign Finance Chair Scott Atlas said, "The energy on Bill's campaign is growing because Texans see that as our next U.S. Senator, Bill White will be a strong voice for our state's future. We deserve a leader who will put Texas first."

Field Director J.D. Gins added, "Grassroots support is building, with more than 1000 of the contributors giving less than $100. Texans are rallying behind him, and we're building an active team across the state."

So a few things I noted:
1. This is just a bit less than the $1.9 Million raised in the first quarter.  So, in that sense, it is nice to see consistency.  Then again, see the next point.
2. For the first time, Bill White has contributed a significant amount of money to his campaign with $821,000.  That said, the amount he has personally given is still far less than the $2 million in loans John Sharp gave himself last quarter.  Taking this number away, though, Bill White still raised over $1 million in the period, according to the press release -- still a good number.
3. The press release did not show any cash on hand numbers.  If we learn this number, we'll update you here.

Update: We have from a good source in the White Campaign that he is reporting about $3.4 million cash on hand.

Also, I have only seen one other Senate candidate's fundraising numbers so far.  They are Michael Williams', who in comparison to Bill White, did poorly again.  He raised about $225,000 this past quarter.

loaning and giving money to your own campaign (3.00 / 1)
A Houston Chronicle article I just read, reminds us that Bill White gave $2 million of his own money to his 2003 mayoral race. The article characterized that as an "investment". I would agree. I think the bashing of John Sharp and Peter Brown for giving or loaning their campaigns substantial amounts of cash is a little strange. I realize that real donations - including lots of small donations - says that there is broad support for a candidate, and should signal that future fundraising will be strong.  But, loaning or giving your own money to your campaign is not in and of itself a campaign crime. It shows some donors that you are serious about your commitment to your campaign.

The Senate race on the D side is essentially neck in neck with COH. The Houston mayor's race is another story - Peter Brown appears to have the cash to start communicating earlier with voters - on the air and by mail - than his opponents. The conventional wisdom is that he probably needs that lead time.

This is really the main reason I try to often point out self-loans and candidates giving themselves money.  At least in competition between Democrats when we are trying to decide which Democrat is best for ourselves.  So often, campaigns try to hide that money is given by the candidates.  This press release did not, but others have.

So I think it is fair to constantly point out the fact, if nothing more.  Quite frankly, I would love for John Sharp and Bill White to give themselves millions of dollars each, but that is not a good way to measure fundraising ability, something I think is especially important as in this race as we try to decide who we will support (should Kay Bailey resign).  This race will almost definitely go to a runoff, and I want a Democrat to win -- so I will mostly decide my vote on who I think can campaign better to win that runoff.  And fundraising ability is certainly within that.

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write."  -  John Adams
