Gov. Perry Inserts Typo in Veto Message of Bill About Voter Registration Typos

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Fri Jul 03, 2009 at 08:02 PM CDT

Rep. Scott Hochberg's bill, HB 1457, which would have given authority to the Secretary of State to allow for corrections of obvious typos by voter registration clerks when matching voter registrations to the DPS drivers license file, has been vetoed by Gov. Rick Perry. Each year it is estimated that tens of thousands of valid voter registration applications are denied because of clerical error.

Understandably, Gov. Perry isn't all that interested in voters being able to register to vote given his strong support for Voter Suppression legislation. But in a hint of irony, his veto message of HB 1457... contains a clerical error. Hat tip to Quorum Report.

House Bill No. 1457 would require the secretary of state to develop a system for accepting voter registration applications when the information provided by the voter does not match the indentifying information for that individual in the records of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) or other state agencies.

I(n)dentifying information, eh?

The Veto Message from Governor Perry (0.00 / 0)
The veto message about HB 1457 also says:

A misspelled name or incorrect date of birth on a voter registration application is a strong indication that the application was filled out by someone other than the rightful voter. [emphasis mine.]

I love "strong indications." They're so strong.

Don't Blame Perry (0.00 / 0)

Don't blame Perry for slip-ups of this kind: he doesn't even read the veto statements--or the bills.

That's right. The buck doesn't stop there. Even so, this kind of error shows an overall problem with his office.

Yet another example (5.00 / 1)
of the continued failure of Texas Republicans to learn the lessons from Rep. Betty Brown's experience this legislative session, and their continued determination to do everything possible to suppress the right of every American citizen to vote.

As I testified in the public hearing on the voter suppression bill, these name-matching issues have proven to be particularly onerous for Asian Americans.  As many as 1 out of 8 eligible AAPI voters in Florida in 2008 may have been improperly denied the right to vote because of name-matching problems.  Laws like Rep. Hochberg's bill in other states have been tremendously helpful in addressing these problems, not just for Asian American voters, but for many who often fall victim to the inevitable mistakes that arise when transcribing millions of applications.

Unfortunately, nothing about this is remotely surprising.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

veto or no (0.00 / 0)
If a veto is not spelled properly, is it a valid veto. There is a strong indication that Perry actually wrote this veto since it isn't spelled right.

I can't wait for him to start vetoing via Twitter.
