Former Travis District Attorney Ronnie Earle Considering Statewide Run

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Buried away at the end of Statesman reporter Gardner Selby's piece on Tom Schieffer's announcement was a quote from former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle that he's looking at running statewide, including the Governor's race.

Former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle said Wednesday he is "leaning more toward running for governor. I'm just trying to figure out where I can make the greatest contribution," he said.

A real candidate!!

Although (3.00 / 1)
I kinda wish he'd run for AG. But let me have the popcorn concession for a Perry-Earle duel.

I don't know about this .... (3.00 / 2)
I like Ronnie and think he'd be a fine governor, but this raises two questions for me:

1) Can he raise the money? He's not seen a competitive race in years, and I have no idea if he can raise the eight-figure sum needed to win.

2) if Kay Bailey beats Perry in the primary, will his failed prosecution of her doom any remote chance he might otherwise have of winning the general? He came out of that episode with a lot of egg on his face and there's no question it would become the issue that dominated the race.

Leticia Van de Putte suggested Kirk Watson run. Personally I think the right mix would be for Watson to run for Gov (I know HE can raise the money) and for Earle to seek the AG's slot.

I'm with you ... (0.00 / 0)
Earl would make a great AG and Watson would be a great Gov. Not only that I think Watson would make a much better statewide candidate that would help down ballot races more than Earl.

Earle definitely could do some good as AG or Lt. Gov. (0.00 / 0)
a post Hutchison hasn't expressed interest in.

As a Democrat the idea of a Governor Ronnie Earle would thrill me right down to my toes. As a pragmatic Texas voter, if we could get him in the Senate instead of "Big John" Cornyn, what a coup!!

Yet if as he says he truly wants to do the most good, AG or Lt. Gov. would be a better step (especially a great first step into the sometimes excessively nasty arena that is Texas politics).
