Chris Cillizza Weighs In on U.S. Senate Race

by: David Mauro

Fri Jun 19, 2009 at 11:24 AM CDT

Chris Cillizza, who writes The Fix column for the Washington Post, released a list of his top 10 most competitive U.S. Senate races earlier this morning.

Although the possible special election in Texas did not make the top 10 (yet), Cillizza did have some advice on how Democrats could win their first statewide race since 1994.

Texas is a bit more of a longshot although a special election race, which would be triggered by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's (R) resignation to focus full time for governor, would create an unpredictable dynamic where Democrats might have a chance. The party's preferred candidate is Houston Mayor Bill White although former state Comptroller John Sharp is running too. In truth, for Democrats to have a pickup opportunity, Sharp would probably need to step aside.

Cillizza is a Washington reporter and no Texas expert. However, others including BOR's Phillip Martin, have suggested that given his substantial experience in state government and lack of experience in federal government Sharp would make a stronger candidate for Governor.

Although no well-known Democrat has entered the Governor's race yet, those close the Sharp campaign maintain that he is the Senate race to stay.

If Bill White wants to run as the Washington party insider, more power to him.  He might be guaranteed more Burnt Orange Report puff pieces like this one from David Mauro, but I'm not so sure ordinary voters will be as impressed.

Reporting (5.00 / 1)
what a well respected columnist wrote about Democratic prospects in TX is not a "puff piece." As I said, he is not a Texas expert.

But I'm glad this post compelled you to make your first comment on BOR.

Saw both White and Sharp tonight in Collin County (0.00 / 0)
The regular voters seemed to be flocking to White afterwards to talk to him while Sharp's circle was significantly smaller.

cillizza is good (0.00 / 0)
and smart. he also puts in a lot of legwork on races he covers.

one might ought to remember that keeping an ear to what the DC media says is helpful.

cillizza is smart...but i'm inclined to think that he is echoing what he has heard from DC Dem insiders.

david, if this was "puff" you need to work on your puffery because it looked like a fairly straightforward sharing of the broader perspective on the senate race.

I think it helps to have two Democratic candidates (0.00 / 0)
It energizes Democratic turnout for the first round wich would carry over into a likely runoff, and it increases the number of voters who would vote for one or the other Democrat.  The Democrats just need to be sure to aim their fire at the Republicans and not at each other.

There is even a chance that Sharp and White could make the runoff and shut out the Republicans if the Republican field is large enough.

Chris Cillizza & comment on Texas (0.00 / 0)
I don't expect anyone who doesn't cover Texas daily to have a complete grasp of our unusual and complicated circumstances. I believe him to have a good grasp of the whole national picture because I listen to him and agree with a good many of his political assessments. ( Of course people you agree with seem smarter than people you don't)
Having said that Bill white seems to be a very good fit for the Senate race. I get the feeling from reading other stories here that B.O.R. hasn't warmed  up to Tom Schieffer for governor. We need a good candidate in every race and he has at least been willing to step up to the plate.

On Schieffer (0.00 / 0)
He's making great moves early on in his campaign, and some of his staff hires and the people he's surrounding himself with give him legit credibility. It's just...first impressions are important for a reason.

I think if I heard good details about his statewide GOTV plan, or how he plans to raise money for his campaign -- basically, some signs of a more excellent campaign plan, then I could get excited about him. In the mean time, you know -- we'll be hearing from him again soon, I'm sure.

latest rumor on Sharp (0.00 / 0)
That I've heard is he is likely to run for Lt. Governor.

Who knows.  Chasing these rumors reminds me of a dog chasing its tail.

Schieffer is still in the proces of hiring his staff.  Taking his time with it and doing extensive interviews.  He has some name ID in his campaign steering committee though.

When I interviewed him he did say that he was going to take his time in hiring the right consultants and such cause he didn't want to be gauged in the pocketbook.

I think as his campaign kicks off early next week you'll start to see the formation of a pretty formidable group of people surrounding him and running things.  From the Tarrant County perspective it is impressive and exciting.
