Austin Mayor's Race: Robocall Attacks Lee, Praises Brewster

by: Phillip Martin

Fri May 08, 2009 at 08:11 PM CDT

Just got this in an e-mail (changed to fix grammar):

Just got a negative robo-call from a group identifying themselves as Responsible Growth for Northcross. it was NASTY -- it attacked Lee and accused him of taking money from Clayton Williams, putting developers over voters, said that Lee doesn't listen...

It then went on to praise Brewster as a progressive who has the support of the film and clean energy industry.

For what it's worth. Anyone else getting the call? Responsible Growth for Northcross was the the group that Jason Meeker was highly invovled with last year regarding the Walmart they were trying to keep out of Northcross Mall. No idea of Meeker was involved w/ this call or not.

I asked if the person got the number or recorded the call. "No" to both counts. But if anyone else happens to have a landline and a tape recorder handy, maybe see if you get a call and let us know -- we'll help figure out a way to get the audio online.

(What would this be -- Reason #8 I hate City Council races? I've lost count...)

Yep. Got the call around 8 PM. The speaker wasn't that guy from last year (Meeker?), it was a guy named Jason Mittman.

I looked it up, and sure enough, Lee did take a max donation from Claytie Williams. WHY? Why on earth would he do something like that? I mean this is a guy that John McCain refused to have a fundraiser with in the presidential campaign because of his lack of sensitivity to women from his legendary race against Ann Richards. The blogs were railing about the lack of due diligence on McCain's people. I can understand a national Republican campaign not vetting Claytie, but an Austin mayoral campaign? I am really surprised especially given Lee's endorsements.

I am more surprised that NONE of the media picked this up. Who--apart from Lee reading Brewsters report's--are reading those reports? I do think this is news and I prefer not to get my news from robocalls.

I agree with you Phillip. I HATE robocalls of any kind. I've gotten 4 from Lee and this was the first one that was not from Lee (I assume from Brewster).

I also hate negative campaigning from any side. Ever.

Guilt by Association, Surprised? No (0.00 / 0)
I sure, if I cared, I could dredge up some Republican contributions for McCracken on his campaign finance reports for me to pretend to be appalled about. But the At-Large elections system that McCracken still supports over a mixed district system, is suppose to be non-partisan, so I will pass.

BTW, cut my land line off, so no more robo calls for me. An unlisted cell phone number is the way to go.

I am with you on point #2.

To your first point, I am sure we could dredge up GOPers on all candidates for city council, but Clayton Williams is not just "some Republican." There are only a couple of Republican more notorious and newsworthy than Claytie (Karl Rove, W., Perry) for an Austin election.

Wouldn't a mixed-district system also be non-partisan?

Here is this deal (3.00 / 1)
Both Democrats and Republicans in South Austin are going to reject McCracken's candidacy in a run-off election because of the lack of geographic representation in South Austin, in particular, and the rest of non-Central Austin in general. This along with traffic congestion and our support for basic city services such as police, fire, and EMS.

There have been several posts at BOR, by McCracken supporters suggesting "we" are all on the same team as opposed to Strayhorn supporters. My observations is as follows: Strayhorn is getting the bulk of the Ron Paul followers, with Strayhorn, McCracken and Leffingwell splitting the rest of the traditional Republican voters fairly evenly.

And yes, regardless of which election system we have have, city council elections are in theory non-partisan. But everyone one knows this is BS in practice. That's why in the end, Leffingwell is going to be our next Mayor.

What is RG4N's tax status? (0.00 / 0)
PAC? 501c3?

RG4N is a 501c4, not a PAC (0.00 / 0)
Jason Mittman was one of the organizers and was very active with the group in the beginning, but was never on the board. According to Jason, he identified himself on the call as one of the founders of RG4N. While I'm no longer with RG4N, I've been told that RG4N was unaware of and not involved in the calls.
