| On April 9, 2009, Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry waded into General Beck's loony bin and declared Texas' sovereignty from the U.S., saying that the time has come to "draw the line in the sand" against the federal government. "No longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas."
You remember Glenn Beck who said Sep 9, 2005 "...this is horrible to say, and I wonder if I'm alone in this -- you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims' families? ...I don't hate all of them. I hate probably about 10 of them. But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining. And we did our best for them." |
Rick Perry "I believe the federal government has become oppressive. It's become oppressive in its size, its intrusion in the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state.
Texans need to ask themselves a question. Do they side with those in Washington who are pursuing this unprecedented expansion of power, or do they believe in individual rights and responsibilities laid down in our foundational documents.
Where're you gonna' stand? With an ever-growing Washington bureaucracy, or are you going to stand with the people of this state who understand the importance of state's rights.
Texans need to stand up. They need to be heard, because the state of affairs that we find ourselves in cannot continue indefinitely...
...We think it's time to draw the line in the sand and tell Washington that no longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas. That's what this press conference, that's what these Texans are standing up for. There is a point in time where you stand up and say enough is enough, and I think Americans, and Texans especially have reached that point. "
Rick has been isolated to representing the non-metropolitan areas of Texas as Democrats are standing head and shoulders with President Barack Obama. What Rick does not mention is that former President Bush grew the government in the last 8 years more than 40%!
This type of negative rhetoric does nothing but to antagonize Texans and incite more divisiveness and discord. "Me thinks Perry doth protest too much."
The hypocrisy of Perry is demonstrated as he recently contacted the federal government for help: http://governor.state.tx.us/...
In a letter to FEMA Administrator David Paulison, Gov. Perry today called on the federal government to reimburse the state in full for operation efforts carried out since January.
"On behalf of all Texans affected by the ongoing wildfires, I strongly urge FEMA to reconsider its decision to deny our Texas request for aid," said Gov. Perry.
Gov. Perry continues to request federal aid for:
* Individual Assistance including the Individual & Households Program, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Crisis Counseling, and Small Business Administration Disaster Loans and U.S. Department of Agriculture loans;
* Public Assistance, which includes debris removal, emergency protective measures and repair of damage to public structures; and
* Hazard Mitigation statewide, which entails actions to strengthen infrastructure against future disasters.
What Rick really wants is more suffering for Texans as he declares independence from such federal programs as the job creating stimulus package rejecting federal school funding, federal highway funding, and financial aid for military veterans, and unemployment insurance for Texans who have lost jobs and Medicaid for Texas' poor. Texans has the highest insurance rates in the country and we are ranked the lowest state in taking care of our seniors.
Not only are Perry's comments irresponsible, they are juvenile and out of touch with mainstream Americans.
The truth is that Rick is playing Texas politics with the lives of Texans. As a classic Republican, Rick will run Texas into the ground and then expect the Federal Government to bail out Texas as it goes bankrupt.
I would remind the governor Texas was voluntarily annexed by the USA in 1845, after having been an independent Republic for 9 years, having won independence from Mexico and his secession antics is nothing more than an urban legend because Texas does not have the right to seceded from the Union. A thorough reading of all documents for annexation shows that no provision is made for Texas to secede from the United States. Texas has the same rights granted to it as any other state and can only affect its territory by dividing itself into 4 smaller states, including "Texas", to essentially create 5 states. While the right to secede may be open to debate, the resolution of the Civil War has settled the question once and for all regarding any state's attempt at seceding from the Union.
Sedition is a subversive act against the government, Perry is not being subversive, he is right out in the open with his anti-Americanism.
I assure Mr. Perry this is one Texan who has been a Texan longer the Rick has been alive. America already experienced a leader from Texas, how did that Bush thing work out for Americans? I sure do miss Ann Richards.
I would rather focus on the positive aspects of our nation and those words of wisdom spoken in 2004:
"Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us -- the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of "anything goes." Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America -- there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America -- there's the United States of America.
The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an "awesome God" in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we've got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America. "President Barack Obama |
