Kinky Friedman Outlines Fundraising Committee & a Personal Note

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Apr 14, 2009 at 09:00 PM CDT

Almost missed this from the Statesman today.

San Antonio attorney and Friedman adviser Abel Dominguez will serve as treasurer of the campaign committee, called "Texans for Kinky."

Dominguez orchestrated Victor Morales' victory in the 1996 Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower also is helping Friedman.

Jim Hightower? Really? Disappointing.

If there is anything that I'll take for comfort, it is the tone of the following statements from both the Statesman article and his campaign press release.

"I am a humorist, but I know these are not humorous times," Friedman said in a letter to supporters. "There is a pathetic lack of leadership at the state level. The last governor who was truly on the side of the people was Ann Richards. She was a very funny lady-she was also a great governor."

"I intend to run a serious campaign, one that grows the party," he wrote. "I intend to play by the rules. I will endorse and campaign for whomever wins the Democratic Primary."

A Personal Note: About a month or so ago, I briefly chatted with Mr. Friedman at the Democratic GAIN event at Opal Devine's that BOR jointly sponsored. I was likely more cordial than Matt in my words, which were few, but it was more than we exchanged in the 2006 campaign. As to that campaign, I stand by the editorial decisions I approved and directed for this site in releasing the tapes and series of posts on 'racist Kinky Friedman' which began as far back as the primary.

In our exchange, Mr. Friedman stated his primary interest was "seeing a Democrat in the Governor's mansion". I agree with that statement (and told him so), though I have yet to be convinced that Kinky Friedman should be that Democrat.

Personally, I believe that Democrat should be Sen. Leticia Van de Putte but I recognize that there is a chance our choices might be limited to Kinky, Tom Schieffer, and maybe Gene Kelly. That's hardly the most inspiring line up for Texas progressives and it's only because there is not a clear alternative at this point to Friedman for grassroots progressives, I may wait and see how seriously he chooses to approach this campaign.

Though, Kinky Friedman does have more in common now with Carole Strayhorn. They'll each have run for office as a Republican, Independent, and as a Democrat.

Those threads from your Personal Note section ~ from the BOR past, are really good reads.

Hightower helping Kinky's campaign (3.00 / 1)
This is Charles Soechting.  I want to make sure that I read correctly that Jim Hightower is "helping" Kinky Friedman.  EVERYONE, this is the same Hightower that nominated RALPH (f%#&ing) NADER for the Green Party nomination in 2000, the same Jim Hightower who has caused more problems for the Democratic Party in Texas than any four legged rodent could ever hope to.  Yes, he nominated the same Nader that cost Gore and the country Florida and gave us eight years of George Bush. What a nightmare to have caused, one that has damned near put this country totally in the tank.   The only thing that Kinky and Hightower have in common is that they have both made money hawking books about themselves and spoiling elections.  I think that it's time for both of them to go to Utopia or wherever in the world Kinky is saving dogs rather than turning things over to the dogs.  Let's not forget who Rick Perry and Karl Rove beat to win their first statewide Texas election----JIM HIGHTOWER.  I might be a little paranoid but I'm starting to see a pattern here with Kinky and Hightower both helping Rick get in and stay in office. Kinky had a choice to run in the Democratic primary in 2006 but he chose to sell books, T-shirts and split the vote so that Rick could win again.  Enough said, but Jim, I hope that this is a misprint and that someone owes you an apology. Not proof read as usual.

with all do respect (3.00 / 1)
hightower is an unapologetic progressive.

if kinky would have entered the 06 primary he would have won without a runoff.

i think hightower lends credibility to a candidate that needs credibility with progressives.

if we had more progressives with a built-in following trying to help Dem candidates at different levels, i think it would be better.

With All Due Respect, II (0.00 / 0)
Charles, with all due respect, I think your post is too critical of Jim Hightower.  Like you, I am disappointed that Jim is supporting Kinky Friedman (if that is true).  However, he has that right, just as you have the right to be critical of him.  I respect his service to our party, just as I respect yours.  I just can't agree that Jim has "caused more problems for the Democratic Party in Texas than any four legged rodent could ever hope to."  I'm not sure than statements like this are in the interest of party building.

I have been a fan of Jim Hightower since he ran for railroad commissioner in 1980.  I attended every state convention from 1982 through 1994 (to the best of my fading memory), and I don't think there was a more popular person at any of those conventions that Jim Hightower.  I think Jim did a lot to bring people to the Democratic Party by standing up for the principles of the Democratic Party during a time when it was increasingly popular to be a Republican.

I do not think that Kinky Friedman is now or ever will be a serious candidate.  I'm not sure why Jim supports Kinky, but I think I can say that it is not to help get Rick Perry re-elected.  Jim lost to Perry for agriculture commissioner in 1990.  He has no interest in keeping Perry as a state employee now.  Jim has a large following.  He is going to have a radio program, sell books and do other things to make money no matter who is in office.

Jim supported Gore in 2000, as you stated.  However, he is not the reason that Gore lost.  I don't blame Jim for the eight years of George Bush's presidency.  I'm not looking to go back down that road so I'm putting up a stop sign.

Let's look to the present and the future.  Who is going to be our gubernatorial nominee in 2010.  Karl's post suggests that Gene Kelly might run.  All I'll say is I hope not.  As I've said, I do not believe that Kinky is a serious candidate (and I disagree with Colin's post only in his stating that had Kinky been in the 2006 primary he would have won without a runoff).  I believe Leticia Van de Putte has formed an exploratory committee to run for a state office.  There has been talk of her running for governor.  Some people want Henry Cisneros to run.

My choice for governor is Tom Schieffer.  Tom is a friend of mine.  I am a liberal.  As I've mentioned before, I hope that all of you who are not already supporting someone else will listen to his positions on the issues facing Texans and give him a fair chance.

My hope for the 2010 gubernatorial campaign is that all of the candidates will run positive campaigns and address issues that are important to Texans.  All of the campaigns need to be positive and free of personal attacks.  On that note, if Jim Hightower and Kinky Friedman are in Utopia, I hope it's in Utopia, Texas so they can vote the Democratic nominee for governor, just as I will be doing.

I'm with Charles. Hightower is a loon. (0.00 / 0)
As is kinky. A complete joke.

There can be nothing worse than kinky running as a Democrat, except for him winning the nomination. It would complete the three ring circus everyone calls Texas.

Hightower has lost his mind. Again.

He has a 3 minute show on KPFT in Houston. It is all I can stand about KPFT and now that is going to be gone.

Hightower has never thought very far ahead, so I doubt he had any part of any master plan to elect W President and keep Perry as Governor in 2006. Do love the quote that Hightower "caused more problems for the Democratic Party in Texas than any four legged rodent could ever hope to. Adding it to my list.
