Last week, Leticia Van de Putte was in Houston to announce Texas First, her economic policy plan for the state of Texas. In the plan, Van de Putte recognizes that good jobs are absolutely necessary to the continuing success of the Texas economy.

Van de Putte made the announcement at St. Arnold’s Brewery. The senator has long been a champion of the craft beer industry. Last session, Van de Putte was instrumental in passing legislation that strengthened the craft beer industry in Texas by allowing breweries to charge for beer by the glass on site, among other things. Her work has allowed breweries better access to profits and expansion, and is just one example of her economic acumen.

The entire economic plan is available online, but it has five main points:

  1. Foster entrepreneurship, and small business growth and opportunity.
  2. Ensure an attractive business climate by maintaining a predictable regulatory system.
  3. Ensure Texas businesses can remain competitive in today’s economic market.
  4. Preserve competitive economic development incentives that grow the Texas economy and create jobs.
  5. Provide every Texan the opportunity to be workforce ready.

The craft beer business is booming and, thanks to the efforts of legislators like Van de Putte, shows no sign of slowing down any time soon – and these are exactly the small businesses Van de Putte recognizes as key to our economic success. Van de Putte also draws on her own experience as a neighborhood pharmacist in San Antonio to draw connections between running a business and economic policy:

As a small business owner, I know that in good times you invest, you always balance your budget carefully, and you trust hardworking Texans. I know Texans take pride in a good paying job, and entrepreneurs crave an environment that fosters opportunity. As Lieutenant Governor, I will fight for a strong business climate and a quality workforce, so that businesses create jobs in Texas. Through fair and low taxes, predictable regulation, smart investments, and a public education that is second to none, we will foster a prosperous future for Texas businesses and workers.

If her dedication to important local industries like craft beer is any indication, Van de Putte is more than ready to tackle the Texas economy as a statewide elected official.
