Steve Stockman Misses More House Votes...For a Bitcoin Promotion Event

Rep. Steve Stockman

Fresh off of two weeks missing from Congress, at least part of which appears to have been an congressional trip to Russia unknown to his own staff, Republican Steve Stockman is at it again. On Monday night, he missed two more votes despite being on American soil and somewhere his staff could locate him.

Where was that? A Bitcoin promotion event in New York City at which Stockman was the guest of honor. Bringing his total number of votes missed this year to 19, Stockman apparently thought being there was more important for Texas. This is clearly a campaign move to play up his right-wing credentials, as Bitcoin is very popular among right-wingers (though not only this subset) who fantasize about an online platform in which their money is not regulated or overseen by traditional American monetary policy. Though the event was in Manhattan's financial district, there was no confrontation between Stockman and fellow bank employee and senatorial primary opponent John Cornyn.

Late last year, Stockman became one of the first federal politicians to accept Bitcoin donations. He has called the digital currency "the future". His campaign finance report through the last day of the year, however, shows no such donations.

More below the jump.

"The first vote he missed on Monday night was on a bill involving preparedness for chemical or biological attack; that passed with only 2 no votes. The second vote came on a bill to ensure in-state tuition for veterans attending college; that passed unanimously, with Stockman and 40 other House members absent," the Dallas Morning News explains.

Lest anyone starts making excuses for these two missed votes or the previous seventeen this year, it's important to remember that Stockman has barely been campaigning in Texas. He's held one campaign event in Texas. One. The other time he's been AWOL or at this "cryptocurrency" event. These are the irrational actions of a man who has given up on his job in Congress in favor of...not being in Congress. No serious legislation in his purview, he threatened after the State of the Union to draw up Articles of Impeachment against President Obama.

If he wants to gain traction as America's dumbest Texas Republican, he's going to have a lot of competition.

At 0:20 in this video, Stockman gives a lot of "freedom" explanations for why he was in New York last night:

What about doing your job, Steve?
