John Cornyn Opposes Effort to Ensure Equal Voting Rights in Texas, Is Schooled on History

by: Katherine Haenschen

Mon Feb 03, 2014 at 01:00 PM CST

John Cornyn is opposing an effort to ensure equal voting rights for all Texans, claiming that the effort actually discriminates against Texas.

Wait, what?

Cornyn is apparently willfully ignorant of the long history of race-based voter discrimination in Texas. This weekend, Melissa Harris-Perry aired an open letter to Cornyn, detailing the long and shameful history of denying minority voters a ballot in Texas.

It's not about discrimination against Texas; it's about Texas's history of discriminating against voters. Everyone should watch this and catch up on the terrible history of discrimination at the polls in Texas, to understand why we need measures such as the Voting Rights Act to guard against these ongoing abuses.

Below the jump, watch MHP explain the long history of race-based voter discrimination in Texas to John Cornyn.

Here is Melissa Harris-Perry's open letter to our Senior Senator:

In 2014, anyone who can legally vote can pass an English literacy test. Or have ID. It's easier to vote and change everyone's fate than it is to turn on utilities....jeez

MHP's open letter will be entertain-able whenever we get amnesty passed.
