Steve Stockman Has Started Lying About His Jail Time, Felony Charge

by: Ben Sherman

Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Clear Lake

On Friday night, Cornyn challenger Steve Stockman characterized a group supporting his opponent of lying in its claims that Stockman has been "jailed more than once" and was "charged with a felony."

The problem is, Todd Gillman explains, both of thus claims are true, and Stockman has admitted it in the past. The Clear Lake Republican told the Dallas Morning News in 1995: "I may have been in jail a couple of times, two or three times." He also confirmed the felony charge, telling the Houston Chronicle the same year about how his girlfriend hid three Valiums in his underwear as he was going to jail for a weekend. "When they found that they charged me with a felony," he said.

Stockman is going so far as to sue the Cornyn group, Texans for a Conservative Majority, for its ShadyStockman.com website. Why? It includes a line from a Washington Post story a year ago: "He has been jailed more than once, and was charge with a felony after one such incident when authorities found Valium in his pants."

More below the jump.

"The Cornyn supporters have committed libel per se against me, falsely and maliciously accusing me of a felony," Stockman said in a statement. "Of course, I have never been charged with or committed any such act, and these anonymous Cornyn supporters know it."

According to Steve Stockman 1995, Steve Stockman 2014 is mired in lies. It's not entirely surprising coming from the man who brought "I sat in my own feces and urine for a week to avoid getting drafted" Ted Nugent to the State of the Union last year. Steve Stockman has numerous possible campaign ethics law violations under his belt, and may have even faced a House Ethics Committee investigation if he decided to keep his seat.

For the two weeks before this year's State of the Union, none of Stockman's staff could say where where the man was. It turns out he was in Russia, Israel and Egypt on "official House business".

"News accounts from Cairo last weekend confirmed that he was among a half-dozen members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting with Egypt's interim president and other top officials last weekend. But Stockman had been absent longer than other colleagues on the trip," the Dallas Morning News' Gillmanexplains.

Among the many lies and oddities about Steve Stockman, perhaps the strangest answer would be in response to this question: what is this Senate campaign? Stockman has had one campaign stop - one - since announcing over a month ago. That was a January 14 Dallas appearance at which a top supporter said he had just returned from Egypt.

"That suggests that Stockman traveled to Egypt twice during January," Gillman writes. "The congressman and his staff declined to clarify the matter."

Hardly the first time, and certainly not the last time.

Bill Maher Is Going To Try To Oust A Sitting Member Of Congress (0.00 / 0)
Stockman would be a good candidate for Bill Maher to oust.
He is not likely to beat John Cornyn in the republican primary but if he did we would have Ted Cruz and Steve Stockman as U.S. Senators from Texas. Can you imagine?
Tweet @BillMaher with #flipadistrict and reasons to oust Stockman.
