Texas Democrats Call for Investigation Into Illegal Election Activity By Rockwall County Clerk

The Texas Democratic Party is calling for an investigation into illegal election activity that occurred at the Rockwall County Clerk's office. Rockwall County Clerk Shelli Miller posted on Facebook that individuals could purchase tickets to a Rockwall County GOP fundraiser at the County Clerk's office.

It is against the law to use public governmental facilities for partisan political fundraising activities.

A Rockwall County taxpayer, Stephen Jacobs, heard about the ticket sales and went to the office to determine if this was true. He was able to purchase a ticket to the dinner, which features presumed GOP Gubernatorial nominee Greg Abbott.

"I was shocked that the county clerk would be fundraising for partisan political events at a public office," said Jacobs. "As a Rockwall County taxpayer, I know that this is not where my tax dollars should be going."

An attorney for the Travis County Democratic Party sent a letter (PDF available here) outlining the criminal activities that Miller conducted in selling the ticket at the county office, including accepting a political contribution in a government building and using public resources to assist campaign efforts.

This kind of illegal activity by the very public official charged with overseeing elections calls into question how Miller can carry out her duties in Rockwall County without the integrity of her entire office being questioned. It is shameful that a Republican would use the auspices of her elected, public office to blatantly promote partisan political activity.

Texas Democrats Call for an Investigation Into Illegal Election Activity at the Rockwall County Clerk's Office

Austin, TX - Today, the Texas Democratic Party (TDP) called for a criminal investigation into illegal election activity at the Rockwall County Clerk's office. TDP General Counsel Chad W. Dunn issued a letter to the Rockwall County Clerk calling on her to cease and desist from unlawful political fundraising activities.

On December 16, 2013, Rockwall County Clerk Shelli Miller's Facebook page advertised the sale of tickets at the county clerk's public office for the Rockwall County GOP Reagan Day 2014.

Stephen Jacobs, a Rockwall County resident, heard about the sale of tickets at the county clerk's office and found an advertisement online. He requested a ticket on December 19, 2013 and the next day he purchased the ticket at the county clerk's office. "I was shocked that the county clerk would be fundraising for partisan political events at a public office," said Stephen Jacobs. "As a Rockwall County taxpayer, I know that this is not where my tax dollars should be going."

Attorney General Greg Abbott will be keynoting the event this Saturday, February 1, 2014. Given the involvement of the Abbott Campaign in the Rockwall County GOP Reagan Day, the Texas Democratic Party called for the appointment of an independent special investigator to look further into these illegal activities.

Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Will Hailer issued the following statement:

"It is inexcusable to use taxpayer funded facilities for political fundraising. The Rockwall County GOP must immediately cease their unlawful activities. This is political corruption, plain and simple. A thorough investigation is warranted in this case and it is incumbent on the Attorney General's office to put election year politics aside and move forward by appointing a special investigator."
