Breaking: Wendy Davis Raises Unprecedented Amount Of Money; Beats Greg Abbott Across All Committees

by: Ben Sherman

Tue Jan 14, 2014 at 06:18 PM CST

Update 6:29pm: The $12.2 million raised by Wendy Davis across all three campaign committees bests the $11.5 million the Abbott campaign reported.

In the first fundraising report since her campaign announcement in early October, we learn today that Wendy Davis has raised a massive amount in donations from an astounding number of donors. Davis raised $12.2 million from 71,843 individuals, and received donations from every Texas county.

That's a massive amount of donors, equally important to the high amount raised. The more donors there are, the more likely it is that they will donate again and influence others to donate.

What this report means, at core, is that Davis' momentum is very real and very strong, and she's got the resources to win. No other Texas Democratic candidate for governor has raised this much money, from this many donors, so fast.

"84,704 contributions of $50 or less accounted for 85% of all donations made during this period. Davis' fundraising numbers exceeded expectations and demonstrate the overwhelming support for her candidacy and campaign to be Texas' next Governor," the campaign said.

More below the jump, including the Davis campaign press release.

"Wendy Davis has done more than just meet the credibility threshold, she has sprinted through it, showing broad support and momentum that must scare the tar out of Greg Abbott and his team of Austin insiders," said Davis campaign consultant Matt Angle.

This is a day for Davis supporters to recognize the power of her campaign and double down on their efforts. These numbers are tangible evidence that Davis can win because it shows that her message is getting out -- and Texans are investing in her campaign. The next time someone says it can't happen, supporters can point to this report.

"Abbott's numbers really don't matter at this point. What matters is that Wendy Davis is on track to raise the nearly $40 million she needs to run a competitive campaign in Texas, further demonstrating that people recognize her as a mainstream Texan who knows how to keep our state strong," Angle said. "Greg Abbott remains a captive of narrow special interests who puts his own political needs and ambitions ahead of everything else - and Texans know that."

Davis Reports Record Strength in Campaign for Texas Governor

More Than $12.2 Million Raised, Showing Unprecedented Support for Candidacy

FORT WORTH, TX - Senator Wendy Davis reported that she has raised over $12.2 million in her bid for Governor of Texas, the result of contributions from 71,843 individual contributors. Davis' first fundraising report since announcing her campaign on October 3, 2013 includes contributions made to Wendy R. Davis for Governor, Inc., Wendy R. Davis Candidate/Officeholder, and the Texas Victory Committee, Inc. between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.

84,704 contributions of $50 or less accounted for 85% of all donations made during this period. Davis' fundraising numbers exceeded expectations and demonstrate the overwhelming support for her candidacy and campaign to be Texas' next Governor. Texans from all 254 counties in the Lone Star State contributed to her campaign, further proof that Texans across the state believe she can win.

Total Contributions:
Wendy R. Davis for Governor, Inc.: $4,172,778
Wendy R. Davis Candidate/Officeholder: $4,555,228
Texas Victory Committee, Inc.: $3,501,513

Additionally, Battleground Texas is expected to report contributions totaling $1.8 million in this reporting period. Since Davis announced her candidacy in October, Battleground Texas has been working closely with the Wendy Davis campaign to register and engage voters across Texas. Battleground Texas began operating in early 2013 and strongly supported Senator Davis' entry into the Governor's race.

The Texas Victory Committee is a joint effort between the Wendy R. Davis for Governor campaign and Battleground Texas created to support electing Wendy Davis as Texas' next governor, particularly Senator Davis' specific commitment to running an historic grassroots campaign across Texas.

The title of this post was changed to reflect the update including Abbott's fundraising totals.
