State Senator Wendy Davis was widely expected to announce her plans to either seek re-election to SD-10 or run for Governor by Labor Day. However, a family health emergency has postponed her announcement, likely until the end of September.
Senator Davis released the following statement today:
“As you know, my father has been in the hospital for the past two weeks making good but slow progress in recovering from complications following major surgery. We remain hopeful that the improvements we've seen in his health will continue. As a result, I will not be making any official announcement related to my future plans for public office so that I can focus on the continued care and recovery of my father. It's my hope that he will be able to join me and my family in the next few weeks when I make a public announcement. I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of prayers and support. We've received messages from all over the state and they've been so warm and encouraging.”
Davis's father, Jerry Russell, a mainstay of the Fort Worth theater scene, was hospitalized due to surgical complications that turned into pneumonia. We wish Jerry and all of Senator Davis's family the best as he works to recover.
There is absolutely no need for Davis to rush any announcement while her father is ill. We'll all be standing at the ready to help her however we can, when she's ready to announce.
In the meantime, please send whatever form of good intentions you fell comfortable with towards Senator Davis's father and family.
