On two different radio shows last Monday, Rick Perry claimed that abortion is the second-most common surgery in the United States.
That's a complete lie.
On a list of the 25 most common American surgeries produced by the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons, abortion does not appear at all. PolitiFact Texas gave Perry's claim a “Pants on Fire” rating and said this: “This claim not only lacks a factual basis, it's ridiculous.”
Read more below the jump. Abortions aren't even surgeries. Dr. Barbara Levy, vice president of health policy for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists told PolitiFact that abortions are “minimally invasive” procedures that do not involve surgical cutting. “We call these procedures, not surgeries,” Levy said. “I don't even think it's appropriate to talk about” abortion “as a surgical procedure.”
Even among medical procedures, “abortions do not appear to be more pervasive than numerous other medical procedures”. Unsurprisingly, Perry's office refused to back up the governor's claim. There's nothing available to back it up.
Truth be damned, Rick Perry is determined to pass a bill that will close all but five abortion clinics in Texas and cut off family planning access for millions of Texas women. It is an unconstitutional, anti-woman, anti-family bill.
We're depressingly used to our governor brazenly lying to us. Luckily, we know Perry isn't lying about one thing: seventeen months from now, he won't be our governor anymore.
