As Travis County prepares to adopt the motto of "Out of One - Five" it is interesting to note a piece that appeared in the Austin Chronicle last week. Richard Whittaker reported that a University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll found:
"42% of the 800 respondents supported taking redistricting out of the legislative process and handing it over to an appointed commission. Only 30% backed the status quo, with the rest undecided."
The article went on to note that State Senator Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, already crafted such a bill "which would have established a bipartisan committee - four Republicans, four Democrats and a ninth non-voting president appointed by the members - to draw Congressional districts."
