Bexar County Democratic Party Chair Dan Ramos: Defiant and Irresponsible

by: Randy Bear

Thu Mar 17, 2011 at 05:42 PM CDT

(You'll be hearing more from Randy (and others) soon, but this is timely and important. I think all of us here at BOR agree that this type of language from a Democratic County Party chair is unacceptable. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

The Democratic Party of Bexar County seems to always be in the news these days, much more than its counterpart. Granted you might expect the news to relate to the infamous shellacking Pres. Obama characterized after the 2010 election. Instead it's more about the administrative and management aspects of the party, primarily as it relates to it's chairman, Dan Ramos. So is there an end in sight to this mess? Maybe if you consider Ramos' latest meltdown after an interview with the San Antonio Current but with Ramos continuing a defiant hold on office, much like Col. Gaddafi of Libya, we could be in for a long summer.

In an interview with the San Antonio Current Ramos essentially slammed everyone except his little contingent of westside neighborhood activists. In quoted statements Ramos disparaged the LGBT community, specifically the Stonewall Democrats, and Blacks in profanity laced language. "I liken [Stonewall Democrats] to the Tea Party - the Tea Party and the f***ing Nazi Party - because they're 90 percent white, blue-eyed, and Anglo, and I don't give a s*** who knows that," said Ramos in the interview.

So far several have called for Ramos to step down, including state party chair Boyd Richie. Even with Richie's demands Ramos continues to remain defiant and refuses to relinquish the seat he was elected to in March of last year. In an article in the Express-News Richie's statement said "I will not dignify Mr. Ramos' most recent outburst by restating it, but I will make it clear that the bigoted attitudes he expressed are totally contrary to the beliefs and declarations of the Texas Democratic Party."

This is not the first time Ramos has gone contrary to the local party. Shortly after being elected Ramos decided to appoint people to empty precinct chair positions, essentially what would have led to stacking the deck on the CEC in his favor. I wrote about that situation last May and the issues I saw then. "It's really a time to see if Ramos has the leadership skills for this organization or wants to regress the organization. One action, simple as it may sound, will define his and the organization's future," I said back in May.

Now it looks like not only does Ramos not have the leadership skills to effectively manage the county organization, he seems bent on destroying it as quickly as he can. Several have looked at this lack of leadership and called for Ramos to step down including an editorial in today's Express-News, citing his language and attitudes associated with the SA Current article. "Those comments and his failure to retract them demonstrate his unsuitability to hold any position of leadership," said the editorial.

In a letter today to Bexar County Democrats Chairman Richie re-emphasized the state organization's commitment to help move the county organization forward and create a more meaningful dialogue. "Not only does spiteful and bigoted rhetoric have no place in the Democratic Party, it is in direct conflict with the core principles that define the Democratic Party," said Richie in the letter.

In a normal world Ramos' public comments would be grounds for termination by the organization. Those kind of hateful and spiteful actions would not be tolerated regardless of the organization's political leaning. It's just not who we are as Americans. Well maybe it is if you're a bigoted, racist extremist who really has no desire to constructively work with others. The problem is that Ramos doesn't seem to live in a normal world. He continually seems to be digging for a conspiracy to help substantiate his position.

This is a very dark time for Bexar County Democrats, the likes of which I have never seen in my 23 years in San Antonio. Never before have I seen such behavior and defiance to conventional wisdom by an individual. It is time for Dan Ramos to do the right thing and resign his post as chairman of the Bexar County Democratic Party. Only then can the county organization start working towards healing the wounds that remain and build a strong Democratic organization in San Antonio.

I heard about this story on TV, but I'm glad that you posted more information since I did not get all of the details.  It is apparent that Ramos does not hold the same values or ideals that makes us Democrats.  Let's hope that the Bexar County Democrats take out the garbage.

There is an ideal place for people that express the views of Ramos and it's called the Republican Party!

Ramos (3.00 / 1)

Where did they find this Ramos, anyway?

Response from Sen. Van de Putte (3.00 / 1)
Dear Mr. Chairman:

I thank you for your service to the Bexar County Democratic Party. However, because of our serious concerns due to recent public comments made by you, it has become clear that now is the time for you to resign your office.

Doing so will enable you to turn your full attentions to your precarious health situation, and enable the Bexar County Democratic Party to move forward in unity, fully-focused on our objective of energizing a growing Democratic base, and electing Democratic nominees.

I do not make this request lightly - Bexar County Democrats voted for you as County Chairman, and I deeply respect those voters.

I am equally convinced, however, that when Bexar County Democrats selected you to chair the Party, they were unaware that you would subsequently make the public outbursts you have recently made, and they could not have known the divisiveness your positions would cause. Additionally, voters could not have been aware that you would be a chairman who opts against an open Party process, and who fails to call County Executive Committee meetings in accordance with the rules of the Texas Democratic Party. Indeed, behavior such as yours has even prompted the proposed H.B. 2752.

Inclusiveness, and respect for diversity, are Democratic values which we should all take very seriously. For a County Democratic Chairman to turn his back on these principles is an embarrassment, an insult to valued members of the larger Democratic coalition, and a distraction which only serves to move us backward, not ahead. Comments such as yours have only served to anger and insult many activists and voters, making the chief duty of any county Party Chairman - growing the Party - an impossibility for you to achieve as long as you remain the Chair.

Make no mistake - the divisiveness you have caused is no simple family squabble, which we Democrats often have, and even at times relish. Rather, your behavior has caused irreparable harm, from which it is already too late for any future attempt at atonement on your part to repair.

For these reasons, and with great regret, I respectfully but firmly ask for your immediate resignation as Bexar County Democratic Chairman.

Sincerely,

Leticia Van de Putte

Other leaders of the Democratic Party have also condemned Mr. Ramos' comments (3.00 / 1)
I and other State Democratic Executive Committee members from San Antonio and the corridor through Austin, Dallas, Houston and elsewhere have condemned Mr. Ramos' remarks and demanded his resignation.

Mr. Ramos says he'll stay on no matter what because it is necessary insure that the embezzlement case against the former Treasurer is satisfactorily prosecuted.  Mr. Ramos believes that others were involved and that the trial will bring their complicity to light. Knowing some of those he accuses I sincerely doubt any such complicity ever occurred.

Our best hope though seems to be that when the trial ends his family will prevail upon him to resign in order to deal with his own serious health issues.

where did ramos come from? (3.00 / 1)
old westside union agitator. when i say old, i really mean stuck in the not-so-distant past of political graft in south texas, too. he refuses to understand the lack of "silver crossing palms" these days[pisses him off]; which stimulates his calls for indictment of others in the party. he actually promised people he recruited as new chairs that he would find money to PAY precinct chairs. leticia's letter is terrific and says it well. i don't find trey's bill workable but we do need some party wide changes as ramos has so ably illustrated. i can only hope the coming actions we've put together to remove him work.

Dan came as wolf in sheep's clothing (3.00 / 1)
to ask Stonewall Dems in Bexar County for their endorsement.  He must have run right out and puked afterward, being in the same room with all those "termites".

There are a lot of old-fashioned West Side Dems who are uncomfortable with LGBT folks, but who know better than to go public like this. They realize that times are changing, the West Side is no longer the demographic heart of Bexar County, and they are committed Democrats in spite of their unease with LGBT issues.  They know this is a civil rights struggle, and my hat is off to them.

Addtionally, Dan's dislike of African-Americans and "blue eyes" is equally troubling.  Sadly,he has crossed the line into out-and-out racism.  He will have even less luck in the future months getting help or even cooperation from the very Bexar Dems he needs to get anything done.  Even before he was unable to find folks for critical jobs such as treasurer.  He is unable to run much else except his mouth.

I have to agree that Dan Ramos must go. I am sure that this conflict is very bad for his already very fragile health.  It is definitely very bad for the election of Democrats in Bexar County, and for that reason alone he must resign.

He came in announcing "There is a new sheriff in town." (3.00 / 2)
and hell bent on using his office to get even with everyone, real or imagined, who he felt had slighted him in the past.  Many of us knew this man was a serious racist, but he has finally opened up in the public arena with his true feelings only leaving out his dislike of women in the tirade to the Current reporter.  Now he is refusing to apologize hinting that he was misquoted while essentially repeating the same slurs.

Thank you, Senator Van de Putte, for your letter.  You, Chairman Richie, the BCDP leadership, NEBCD leadership and many other Democratic activists are absolutely right, it is time for Mr Ramos to resign.  Nothing less is acceptable.  Not only were his statements horrific, but his refusal to account for the monies spent from the BCDP Frost bank account makes it impossible for Bexar County Democrats to feel comfortable sending money to retire our debt to the county.  We have a primary coming up by the end of this year and we need to be united, enthusiastic and organized to be successful in 2012.  That is what we are all about, electing Democrats.

Democratically yours,
Madeleine Dewar

I'd say I'd hate to see what he thinks about Asian Americans (3.00 / 2)
but he probably doesn't realize we exist.

Also, what on earth does being county party chair have to do with the court case? Does he think he also controls the justice system?

Hispanic Caucus Rep. issues denunciation of Ramos after many attempts to work things out (4.00 / 2)
SDEC HISPANIC CAUCUS REPRESENTATIVE DENOUNCES DISPARGING STATEMENTS OF BEXAR COUNTY PARTY CHAIR

Preface:  I have made efforts with the State Party to resolve the problems of the BCDP for the past year.  These efforts came to a halt after the remarks by the BCDP Chair.  The damage within the BCDP is permanent; and I can see no candidate to fulfill the BCDP Chair position as being any individual with ties to any faction.  The candidate(s) must be neutral and with no political "baggage" coming into the BCDP.

I believe that if anyone has violated any policy or procedure of Party rules or the rights of CEC members to participate in the democratic process without fear of retaliation, harassment and intimidation these issues need to be addressed.  This type of conduct by any member of the Democratic Party has no right to belong to a political organization which bases its principals on judicial process and the protection of civil rights.

Statement:  As the SDEC Hispanic Caucus Representative, I go on record in saying that the gay/lesbian and African American friends and brothers deserve the respect and dignity as fellow Democrats and human beings.  Racial, derogatory statements and characterizations of the gay/lesbian and African Americans by the Bexar County Democratic Party (BCDP) Chair are morally and ethically wrong and have no place in either the Democratic Party and public in general.

Anglos, Hispanics, gay/lesbian and African Americans Democrats believe in the principles that mandate for all to follow the ideals of equitable treatment and freedom from discrimination of any kind.  The BCDP Chair has violated this mandate and ideal of the Democratic Party.  The dignity and respect of the gay/lesbian and African American community and Democrats was essentially harmed and damaged by the BCDP Chair's comments and statements, in light of that his comments and statements were made public through a media venue.  This is unfortunate for the entire Democratic Party; and Hispanics as well.

This conduct should and will not be condoned; because the Hispanic community would expect no different in reacting to similar racial overtures being made by any individuals towards Hispanics or any other ethnic group or individual.  The recent Census Bureau indicates that Bexar County has reached the 1,000,000 mark of Hispanics living in Bexar County .  The situation to get Hispanics to the polls in Bexar County is now a challenge.

Having said this: in solidarity with our gay/lesbian and African American friends and brothers; and fellow Democrats; I denounce the statements and comments made by the BCDP Chair.  These statements and remarks have no place in our present Democracy and Democratic Party.  For me to remain silent on this matter would contradict my own ideals on the protection of civil rights for all Democrats and minorities.

Respectfully,

Peter Vallecillo

Texas SDEC Hispanic Caucus Representative
