Bill White's Speech at the Texas Democratic Party Convention: Rick Perry Is In It For Himself

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Today is Day 63 of Rick Perry refusing to debate Bill White.

When Bill White left the stage at the Texas Democratic Party convention last Friday night to thunderous applause, the momentum in the race shifted. Bob Moser of the Texas Observer -- who has been critical of White's message at times during the race -- wrote the following lead to his excellent, must-read evaluation of the speech, "Democratic Convention: Bill White Delivers (Oooh-La-La!"

It’s fair to say that Bill White gave the speech of his life in accepting the Democratic nomination in Corpus Christi on Friday night. Now, ye cynics might say that’s not the highest standard in the annals of political rhetoric—and you’d be right. But, hand to God, it was a fine piece of oratory—and one that suited the moment to a T, drawing a razor-sharp contrast between White and incumbent Gov. Rick Perry. And while it was not delivered with preacherly fury or Obamaesque eloquence, it was the right kind of speech for White to inhabit comfortably: a little funny, a little sarcastic, a little uplifting, and appropriately plainspoken.

Watch the speech below. We'll have much, much more on the fantastic weekend in Corpus Christi in the days ahead:

What we see is what we will get (0.00 / 0)
I've seen Bill White, when mayor, speak at small gatherings in Houston.  When he speaks Bill White is 100% Bill White.  He means what he says and he does what he says he will do.

It is as simple and as bold as that.

Unlike Rick Perry, Bill White does not need a coterie of PR handlers, script writers and ventriloquists.

Pretty clear message (0.00 / 0)
I saw this video post on the First Reading blog at AAS this morning.

Even the youngest Texans understand Bill White's message:
Rick Perry is in it for himself!

That is the cutest Bill White supporter ever!
