The latest Rasmussen poll tells a story you're not going to expect if you believe the conventional wisdom:
Rick Perry 48%, Bill White 44%. Read the full Rasmussen Report here.
Seven weeks into his general election campaign, Bill White is performing stronger than ever in the polls. While Rick Perry continues his 2012 Presidential tour — making national appearances at Republican conferences and appearing on the cover of Newsweek — Texas voters continue to turn against him.
One issue that has hurt Perry in recent months has been his record on the economy. Though Perry loves touting Texas as the leader in the country on the economy, the fact is he's using metrics that mean relatively little to most people. There are very real reasons to challenge Rick Perry's economic record in Texas, including:
- The property tax swap Perry passed in '06 created a permanent structural deficit in our state budget, which is contributing to an expected $11-$15 billion shortfall going into the 2011 Legislative Session.
- A recent report showed the Texas Enterprise Fund is “not creating jobs as promised.”
Meanwhile, while Texans tighten their belts, Rick Perry continues to charge taxpayers $9,000 a month to live in an extravagant rental mansion. The Texas Democratic Party has produced a great video attacking Perry for his rental mansion — Matt wrote about it earlier, but I thought I'd paste it below again, because it really is worth watching:
