| Dave Carney is Rick Perry's chief political advisor, which means he is qualified enough to drag his allegedly wildly popular candidate into either barely winning or needing a runoff to win his own party's primary against a featherweight Republican (KBH) who has run the most pathetic multimillion dollar campaign in recent history. Suffice to say, I don't take a lot of stock in what Dave Carney says. But other still do, so before you become one of them, I thought I'd offer you a trip in the "remember this" machine: After the elections in 2008, the biggest question in Texas politics was whether or not Tom Craddick would be elected speaker. I was convinced that Craddick couldn't, and had some numbers and figures to back up what I said. Dave Carney did not -- and said the following to Gardner Selby of the Austin American-Statesman: Dave Carney, a consultant to the political committee that backed GOP House incumbents in this year’s elections, told me Craddick will win another two-year stint as speaker, further suggesting that anti-Craddick sentiment doesn’t reflect general voter concerns. He said it’s driven instead by “guys sitting around in their underwear” writing political blogs.
I, of course, said otherwise. How'd that one turn out, Dave? Flash forward to last Saturday, when Dave Carney sent the following e-mail around touting more nonsense talking points: Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday, the GOP nominee is well positioned for November. The voter frustration with the democrat party nationally has not escaped the attention of Texans. Mayor White is another in a long line of dream team mirages that the net roots of the left have fabricated. In this political environment no competitive state will elect a big city trial lawyer, anti gun, sanctuary city promoting, Clinton protégé DC politician, let alone a conservative state like Texas. While Mayor White has yet to been defined, it is inarguable the Texas voters have been exposed to well over $100 million in negative attack ads against Rick Perry. The voters of Texas know Rick Perry, warts and all, and he still leads Mayor White by double digits in most public polls . Voter registration, voter intensity and the issues matrix in 2010 make any democrat the longest of long shots to be competitive.
Carney is just peddling the same crap -- and lying while he does it. His claim that Rick Perry leads White by double digits is simply a lie: Now -- maybe Dave Carney thinks 6 and 4 are the same numbers as 10 or 12. That would explain why he couldn't correctly count Speaker votes for Craddick. But for those of us who understand the difference between a single-digit and a double-digit margin, I hope you can see that Dave Carney is lying, lying, lying for his own sake. Conventional wisdom is a part of the game, and I understand that. I work for Democrats -- and more importantly I vote for them -- and my perspectives certainly are biased towards Democrats. But I also root my arguments in reason and reality, which is not the same thing Dave Carney does. If he wants to keep his ego inflated and play grand wizard behind the scenes and pretends he knows Texas, he certainly can. I look forward to proving him wrong over the next eight months. |
