Darlene Ewing Elected DCDP Chair

By Byron LaMasters

Darlene Ewing was elected chair of the Dallas County Democratic Party tonight at their executive committee meeting. She was elected with 118 votes to 61 for Bruce Rothstein and 40 for Walter Hofheinz. A quorum of 56% was present (225 precinct chairs).

After the meeting I had the chance to speak with the new chair, and asked her if there was anything that she wanted to share with our readers. Ewing said that I could share with you all that she graduated from UT and is a proud Longhorn. She also agreed to participate in a Q&A interview on BOR in the coming weeks. If any of you have a question that you would to ask of the new party chair, please post it in comments (or email me).

and we thank Dr. Theresa Daniel for her service in the interim.

But Tom, dear boy, let's also not forget to thank Theresa for her behind-the-scenes cloak and dagger attack on a sitting Democratic elected official and all the ensuing chaos in the DCDP.

clap, clap, "dr." Theresa, clap, clap

A sincere thanks REALLY DO go to Darlene for stepping up to the plate. I think she will do a great job if she can actually do anything before the tide changes and she becomes the next target of the good Dr. Daniel and her crazed cronies.

Hello, "its a shame". Who might you be? And why are you attacking the interim chair of the Dallas County Democratic Party who took over a horrendous financial and political situation and made substantial strides to move the DCDP in the right direction towards the 2006 elections?

Thank you, Theresa Daniel. I told her that personally last night, but I say it again. She did a great job over the past month and deserves our thanks.

"It's a Shame?" That's your name? I agree with you: You're a Shame.

And what's this lunacy about the new county chair becoming the "next target" of "cloak and dagger" ways? I've watched every Democratic County Chair in Dallas County for more than 30 years. It wasn't done with Ron Kessler, David Carlock, Mike McCool, Sandy Kress, Bob Greenberg, John Pouland, me, Lisa Payne or Bill Howell (sorry if I forgot someone). Ms. Hays has the distinction of being the first one since my involvement here that was ever given walking papers--to put it nicely--by (a huge majority of) the county executive committee. It was pretty out in the open. Mailings, phone calls, e-mails. Not much "behind-the-scenes cloak-and-dagger" stuff there. And it didn't have to be that way, but it was her choice.

Don't like people expressing their opinions? Well, I cannot help you there. But the truth is that the county party was a mess--in every way imaginable. And people like Theresa Daniel, me, and a solid phalanx of other committed Democrats (you know who they are, no doubt) knew that something had to be done to change it before--not after--everything came crashing down.

Instead of ridiculing Theresa--who actually makes a contribution to our Party--you should be thanking her and all those people you previously referred to as "the cabal."

With the help of all committed Democrats, Darlene Ewing will do an outstanding job. I just left a meeting with her where she spoke "with" (not "down to") a multitude of Democratic candidates--the most we've seen since the 80's. She is a class act.

I am glad that the verbal tripe that you spew (and have spewed for so long) is now in the past. We've got productive work to do. If you can't find any, I suggest reading the front page of any newspaper.

It's a shame, have you ever heard 300 plus people gasp simultaneously?? you should have been at the meeting when Darlene was elected, because that's exactly what happened when the precinct chair were told about the tax liability The DCDP faces because Hays had not filed the necessary IRS paperwork and money 7 out of 12 quarters,I would suggest very strongly that you say prayers or whatever your ilk does, that Hays doesn't face criminal charges. tom madrzykowski precinct 4601 chair.

My guy didn't win and that's to bad because Bruce worked very hard, but once the electionwas over and Darlene Ewing was declared the winner, it became my job to line up behind her and do all that I can to support her. I'm going to miss Theresa, She allowed me a sense of confidence in DCDP that I hadn't felt in a couple of years. Now it is time for all of us to get behind Darlene and raise our party to where it should be.It's just about 10 months til the "06 primaries so there is a lot of work to do. tom madrztkowski 4601 precinct chair

Theresa Daniel deserves thanks from all local democrats for her efforts to get the party back on the right track. Financially, we are in much better position than a month and a half ago. Theresa reopened the office-- every day -- and changed the tone to one that recognizes that, as she puts it: "all of us are smarter than any of us."

As for Darlene she is going to be succesful for at least two reasons. The first is her personal commitment to the party and her skills, both of which are considerable. The second is that she is going to be inclusive of and listen to the democratic community, including planning through the advisory committee and providing financial and other information to the executive committee at our (at least) quarterly meetings. This will contribute to a positive tone for the party and greatly increase our volunteer base and grass roots fundraising opportunities.

Incidentally, the creation of the advisory committee and the rule requiring at least quarterly exec committee meetings is an additional positive legacy of those who "Its a Shame" and his or her ilk have hidden behind psuedonyms to criticize.

Proud to sign my name and proud to be a Dallas County Democrat,

Bruce Rothstein

Bruce,

. . . of course you fail to include yourself and the important things you did to help during this interim period. You also certainly deserve praise in the way you conducted you campaign for county party chair, and I hope you stay as active as ever.
