April 25, 2005Blogging HJR 6By Byron LaMastersIn the Pink Texas is liveblogging HJR 6 with the appropriate title of "Smear the Queer". Pink Dome is also liveblogging the HJR 6 debate. For the short version, just read the preview. I've been watching some of the debate on television, and I believe that Karl-Thomas is watching the debate, and hopefully he'll have some thoughts later. Update: Some of my favorite parts of the debate - Senfronia Thompson wants her 40 acres and a mule, while Rafael Anchia, Garnett Coleman and Paul Moreno in particular have been very articulate against the bill today. Robert Talton just looks like the face of evil - oh wait, he is, and Warren Chisum just appears like a misguided grandfather. I'll update later with the vote count. Update: Final vote, 102-29 with a bunch of abstentions (100 votes needed for passage). Update: Another post from In the Pink Texas and lots more at Pink Dome. Statements from Senfronia Thompson and Garnett Coleman here and via their comments is the actual vote. Also in Pink Dome comments is a statement by Al Edwards that I also recall hearing. The statement by Edwards was something along the lines of how he took offense that a "social ill" (GLBT Texans) was being compared to other civil rights issues. Fortunately, most of Edwards's African-American and Hispanic colleagues felt differently as expressed by their votes. Jump to the extended entry for the roll call vote. AYES - 102 NAYS - 29 PRESENT-NOT-VOTING - 5 ABSENT - 14 Comments
It was Paul Moreno, not Joe Moreno. Posted by: Phil Dupre at April 25, 2005 05:53 PMwhoops.. i knew that... thanks Posted by: Byron L at April 25, 2005 05:55 PMPlus, I believe in the roll call vote afterwards, it was corrected to 101 votes. I need to check the register, but it makes me sad that we were actually 2 votes away from killing this on the 2nd reading. I will be sure to note my displeasure with Patrick Rose who voted it along. Final passage comes tomorrow. Posted by: Karl-T at April 25, 2005 09:08 PMYeah... several notes of mine on the vote count... Turner and Edwards piss me off again... Turner sounded like he was against the amendment in debate, and made some very good points. Then, he voted for the amendment. Edwards called gays and lesbians a "social ill", so that gives me another reason to dislike him. I must especially credit Hubert Vo and Mark Strama. Both are freshmen who won by very narrow margins, but the GLBT community helped both financially and otherwise. It's amazing what that will do. The GLBT community will surely be there with them in their re-election bids - financially and otherwise. Again, Richard Raymond voted against the interests of the GLBT community. That certainly will not help him with GLBT donors for a Democratic primary if he intends to run in CD 28. Perhaps he could instead be setting himself up for a run in the more Republican CD 23. Who knows... Martha Wong - what a shmuck.. she voted for the bill in committee - when she could have made a difference - to get it on to the floor, then voted present on the floor. Does she think that this will actually win her sympathy with Montrose voters? If so, she's delusional. Posted by: Byron L at April 25, 2005 10:48 PMPost a comment
