April 08, 2005Several Consider TX-22 RunBy Byron LaMastersFresh after Richard Morrison's 2004 campaign success in forcing Tom DeLay to actually run a campaign, and amid Tom DeLay's many troubles nowadays, there's renewed interested in taking on Tom DeLay. Richard Morrison has stated flat out that he is running again, and today, the Houston Chronicle notes that Houston City Councilman Gordan Quan, Former Congressman Nick Lampson and State Rep. Rick Noriega also might be interested in running. I tend to agree with Greg. Morrison is the only candidate that actually lives in the district. I think that makes a big difference. Also, Morrison doesn't have a legislative record that can be attacked. This race should be about Tom DeLay. If our nominee is someone with a record that DeLay can go after, then Tom DeLay will do his best to make the race about someone else. Not a popular perspective here: But, I wish like hell Chirs Bell would run against Delay instead of for Gov. After someone suggested it, I did a little research and I feel Bell's money and efforts would be better spent going after Delay. Are you guys serious? I can't believe this is actually a topic of discussion in both Houston and Austin. Tom DeLay, who I hate as much as the next flame'n liberal, will not loose an election to a Democrat. Period, amen, over. Look at the election results from last time, realize that Morrison worked his butt off, and your "success" is Tom getting 55%. Morrison out preformed the top of the ticket by what, 7%. That shows the hard work he did to get shelled. Take that home, put it on your wall, and you can still watch DeLay on TV. Democrats should focus on winning elections instead of fighting unwinnable battles. Case in point: Sheila Jackson Lee. Do Republicans hate her as much as Dems hate DeLay? Probably. Do they invest a sink'n dime into running against her? Nope. Why? They were too busy giving guys like Todd Baxter money. Folks, we need to take the emotion out of our actions because Republicans sure don't care if we "put up a good fight." We owe it to the people we hope to help to fight harder, smarter, and to make the best use of every resource. That means leaving unwinnable races alone and focus on winning where we should. Redistricting depends on it. Posted by: Bill Kelly at April 8, 2005 04:36 PMBill Kelly from UH? Is that you? If so, holler through the link. Posted by: David Edmonson at April 8, 2005 08:35 PMI don't necessariy agree with Bill's attitude toward Delay, I think the right candidate just might be able to beat him, depending on how things go in the next few months. Even fellow republicans are distancing themselves from him. "This race should be about Tom DeLay" hahaha! Let's examine the political strategy of the "new mainstream", shall we? 1) Run somebody with no experience (no Houston area Congressman has elevated straight from the private sector to Congress without serving in public office). 2) Bitch about Tom DeLay (who clearly isn't feeling very bullied, and is rolling his eyes). 3) Throw millions of Soros' money into the race, to try to convince voters that DeLay is the antichrist, and 4) Pray that Morrison wins by default. Because every Democrat knows deep down inside that he can't win by trumpeting his own (lack of) ideas, and can only win by lying about DeLay. The GOP thanks you all so much. =) Posted by: Chris Elam at April 8, 2005 10:28 PMWhy would you prefer someone who has NEVER been elected to ANYTHING such as city council or school board before getting elected to state representative over folks who have? That is as lame as can be and as for Richard Morrison living in the district, last year I saw him in Houston at events in Fondren SW (CD-9), east Stafford (CD-9) and Briagate in Houston (also CD-9) and read about his events in The Heights (CD-18) and with MAD Meyerland Area Democrats (CD-7) but never anything in the Sugar Land area. I actually over the years have seen Gordon Quan at events at the Fort Bend Chamber supporting Sugar Land City Council Members, Fort Bend ISD Board Members etc but NEVER saw Richard Morrison at a Sugar Land Rotary, Sugar Land Exchange Club or Fort Bend Chamber meeting and PLEASE note that no where in the Houston region is there a US Representative whose first job in government was Congress. All of them were former state representatives or in the case of inner-city CD18 former at large council member, the former CD25 Congress Member was a former council member and the new CD9 Congress Member was a former JP. As I asked Tom Reiser's general consultant when I ran into him when I was a delegate at the Republican State Convention in Dallas in 2002 when Reiser ran against Bell for Congress, is your candidate better or different from all those that HAVE WON and therefore he can unlike everyone else skip those steps? He didn't think he could skip high school before college, or college before law school or law school before taking the bar so again I still do not understand why you all believe he could skip the other steps other could not. Posted by: Burt Levine at April 10, 2005 11:08 PMInteresting question, I'd like to hear the answer to that one myself. As I said upthread, I'm sure Morrison is a fine man, but I just don't think he has the necessary experience for this race. Posted by: comeon at April 11, 2005 09:10 AMPost a comment
