I like McLennan County

By Byron LaMasters

Several weeks ago, the Crawford Lone Star Iconoclast endorsed John Kerry. Today, the largest newspaper in George Bush's "home" county joined the chorus to endorse John Kerry as well.

Today's Waco Tribune Herald:

The world, and this country's position in it, has changed profoundly over the past four years of George W. Bush's presidency.

The reality of terrorism, our tenuous fiscal situation and the stark polarization of this nation mandate a thorough evaluation of the direction in which this country is headed.

Within the context of that evaluation, with policy positions discussed on these pages in recent days, the Tribune-Herald editorial board recommends Sen. John Kerry as the best candidate to be president of the United States.

He is a man of intelligence and conscience, of experience in dealing with global and domestic issues. He's a man who logically could assume the title of commander in chief. He knows war's stakes. He's been there.

Those personal qualities alone do not qualify Kerry for the job. They do, however, lend credibility when he talks about what policies this nation needs to stay safe, to deal with domestic needs, and to heal its deep divisions.

[...]

On the Nov. 2 ballot, Kerry is best suited to defend the nation, to mend its fiscal situation, and to bring it back together.

In addition to the Statesman endorsement, Bush also won the Houston Chronicle endorsement as well today. Both papers endorsed Bush in 2000 as well.

Working for the Trib myself, I can say I wasn't too surprised they reached the conclusion they did. I know the editors on the board pretty well, and they really are none too happy with the job Bush has done.

Over at my blog Common Sense, I may not have gotten the scoop on the guys at BOR, but I have some of own humorous observations of the way it came about. My own inside scoop, you might say.

For anyone who wants one, I will try to scan and email the cheat sheet we made. Just email me or leave a comment on my blog. I'll get to it when I get home.

You can send a letter to the Statesman here: http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/feedback/lettersubmit.html

The Chron's endorsement of GW for second time makes no sense to me, unless you think of it as a business decision. Since the begining of the Bush presidency, the Chron has lambasted him on every imaginable issue, usally for doing precisely as he had said he intended to do if elected. But now the dummies turn around and say essentially, "yes, we know he has done an awful job, but maybe next time around, he will do better". Now if that logic makes any sense to anyone, I'd like to meet that person and give them the name of a good therapist. But the Chron probably managed to avoid offending a good many of their subscribers and advertisers which, in reality given that we are in Texas, is really all that matters.
