April 20, 2004A First for MeBy Byron LaMastersI frequently donate to political candidates. I've given money to Howard Dean, John Kerry, (Texas Senate candidate) Paul Sadler, (US Congress candidate) Ron Chapman, (U.S. Senate candidate) Ron Kirk, (State Rep.) Eddie Rodriguez among others. I usually donate $10-$25. I consider myself a party activist who will donate to candidates that I believe in from time to time. However, I've never given money to an out of state candidate (I exclude presidential candidates as they're on the ballot in Texas) - until today. Today, I donated $10 to Barack Obama - the Democratic nominee for the open U.S. Senate seat in Illinois. No, he's not running BlogAds on BOR, nor is he someone that I'll have the chance to vote for. Just listen to his campaign video (and campaign ads), and tell me that you're not inspired. I've spent the last hour or so listening to his ads and videos and I'm just inspired (yeah, I'm a dork). John Kerry would be smart to give this guy a prominent speaking role at the Democratic convention this summer. I endorsed Barack Obama before the Democratic primary in Illinois because he's just amazing. You can read my endorsement here, or check out his website here. God, I hope he wins. He'll be a national Democratic Party star overnight. He's almost too good to be true. Posted by Byron LaMasters at April 20, 2004 11:26 PM | TrackBackComments
I thank you on behalf of my fellow citizens of Illinois! How about Harold Ford...too conservative for you? Posted by: peter at April 21, 2004 07:35 AMyou actually took the time to write a post about a $10 donation? You and Martha Wong's press secretary have a lot in common... Posted by: lurker at April 21, 2004 08:30 AMHell yes! That man's gonna be my senator and I can't wait. Thanks for helping us beat "Jack!" Posted by: alli at notre dame at April 21, 2004 10:40 AMI'm a Chicagoan posting at a University one block from Obama's headquarters downtown. I saw him speak at school. He's completely amazing. I went to his headquarters and picked up a ton of stuff.
The other serious contender, Dan Hynes, was the machine candidate. He couldnt even win his own ward! Obama won because one, he had ads running him as the political son of Paul Simon, and two, this state is democratic and getting more liberal by the day. I'm touched that deep in the heart of Texas, you guys are keeping track of Obama.
The combine (the leading dems and repubs are incestous in helping each other, heck, call it republicrat or democan) didnt want an outside guy to clean up the state. Trust me, Texas politics stinks, but Illinois wasnt that far behind. US Atty Fitz went crazy and completely cleaned house. Rep Gov George Ryan could very well receive the nobel prize (for commuting the sentences for almost everyone on death row) from prison (when he was secretary of state, his office sold licences for bribes leading to multiple deaths and his karl rove, scott fawell, pressured state workers to do campaign work on state time) I'm grateful for Sen Fitz for putting him here He opposed the expansion of o'hare. He's pro-life.
Fitzgerald saw the writing on the wall , and he didnt wanna get his ass kicked. So he quite. Bush wont win his state, so he isnt even going to bother to show his face in illinois. The last time I saw him in chicago was saint patricks day parade 2002, when I chanted ENRON, ENRON, and the entire drunken crowd joined in. He looked me in the eye and kept moving. Obama will be a senator for life, just like Dick Durbin.
