Slam Coulter for Her Anti-American Hatred

By Andrew Dobbs

You know, I was just about to go to bed, finally get some much needed rest when I had to peruse the blogs and I ended up seeing this:

In a column posted on the conservative Heritage Foundation's Web site, Fox News contributor and White House ally Ann Coulter unleashed an attack on Cleland's service to his country, claiming that the triple amputee/decorated war hero displayed "no bravery" in Vietnam. The politically motivated assault came after Cleland appeared at events critical of the Administration, once again showing the conservatives pattern of impugning the patriotism of those who question their policy. It comes just after President Bush himself nominated Cleland to the Export-Import Bank and after Bush called Cleland "a good Democratic senator out of Georgia." (...)

SAYING AN AMPUTEE VET 'DIDN'T GIVE LIMBS FOR HIS COUNTRY': Coulter wrote, "Cleland didn't give his limbs for his country or leave them on the battlefield" because she says he lost his limbs in a "routine, noncombat mission where he was about to drink beer with his friends." But as the 8/1/99 Esquire Magazine notes, Cleland lost two legs and an arm in Vietnam when a grenade accidentally detonated after he and another soldier jumped off a helicopter in a combat zone.

SAYING A SILVER STAR WINNER IS NOT A "WAR HERO": Coulter said people "should stop allowing [Cleland to be] portrayed as a war hero" – despite the fact that, in a separate incident four days before he lost three limbs, Cleland won a Silver Star - one of the highest honors for combat courage the U.S. military gives out. The congressional citation which came with the medal specifically said that during a "heavy enemy rocket and mortar attack Captain Cleland, disregarding his own safety, exposed himself to the rocket barrage as he left his covered position to administer first aid to his wounded comrades. He then assisted in moving the injured personnel to covered positions." The citation concluded, "Cleland's gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army."

SAYING CLELAND WAS "LUCKY" TO HAVE LIMBS BLOWN OFF: Coulter said, "Luckily for Cleland…he happened to [lose his limbs] while in Vietnam" and said that had he been injured "at Fort Dix rather than in Vietnam, he would never have been a U.S. Senator." Of course, Cleland probably would not have been dealing with live grenades and enemy fire in the save haven of Ft. Dix.

I can't remember being so angry at anything in a long time. A man is awarded medals for his bravery in combat and during that fight- a fight no one wanted a part of but that thousands of brave men fought because they loved their country- he lost three of his limbs. And then some empty headed, evil minded, slut of a Republican like Ann Coulter has the gall to say that he was lucky, that he is not a hero, that he has shown no bravery. Well Ann Coulter can kiss my ass. It's time to demand some action.

You can contact Ann Coulter directly here, be sure to use small words- she isn't the brightest light in the box. Furthermore, be sure that you don't say anything patriotic- someone who hates America so much that they would sneer at a man that gave up his mobility, his limbs and nearly his life for this country might get upset.

You can email Fox News here and tell them how you feel about them putting someone like Ann Coulter on the air.

The thing is, we can't do anything too bad to her. She can say all of the anti-American, anti-soldier, hateful, malicious and untrue statements she wants to and there is little to nothing we can do about it. She has that right because thousands of Americans have given their lives for those rights and have answered the call to service with honor and dignity, not cowardice and conniving. Max Cleland is a great man, an honorable man of dignity- Ann Coulter owes him and all our veterans a huge apology for the vitriolic hatred she spews so she can be on TV more. Shame on her.

The more we slam her, the more they keep giving her airtime. I propose we just start spreading vile rumors instead, reporting on her catching AIDs from sleeping with Jacques Chirac and her illegitimate child from her trysts with Louis Farrakhan, for example.

Poor Max Cleland. He really makes those Vietnam era "chickenhawks" in the GOP feel insecure. Perhaps they feel that by attempting to discredit Cleland, the public will forget about how they evaded service in Vietnam by playing up minor ailments or using family clout to get them into the safe havens of the guard or the reserves.
Here are some of the more famous chickenhawks being protected by Coulter:

It's very doubtful that sending emails to Fox "News" or to Coulter will have any effect. A boycott of advertisers might get you a little publicity but probably wouldn't have much economic impact.
Your best bet is to simply publicize Coulter's inane rantings as much as possible among moderates and veterans groups. They have more clout nationally.
And you can make the few remaining moderate Republicans take a stand on Coulter's views. Senators McCain and Hagel (both Vietnam vets) are excellent examples of this endangered species.

I get in people's face about her because they deserve it. For example, I was at a Barnes & Noble some months back asking to locate a book at the information desk. Some Freeper walked up to the desk and asked where to find a copy of Coulter's "Treason." I said to his face, "you're committing treason by giving money to that woman." (After the guy walked away speechless, the store clerk completely agreed with me).

Remember, this is the woman, who immediately after 9-11, said that we needed to occupy the entire Middle East, murder their leaders, and convert them all to Christianity. It's people like Coulter that explain (if not justify) why the Arabs fear/hate us. She is the biggest nut of them all.

Ann Coulter is not a nut! She is cold, calculating and uses such incendiary language for one purpose: too sell her books. Just look at the titles -- "Treason", "Slander", and tell me those words alone don't incite something on the right. She's got it down pat. Her next book will probably be titled "Fags" or somesuch.

I, for one, tire of her over-the-top portrayals of everything Democrat. It's getting old already, Ann

Coulter got pink-slipped recently by The Press-Enterprise.

Calling her on stuff like this won't always help, but sometimes it gets results, and it's always right. Someone will always be willing to publish her stuff, but you can help push her to the fringes.

Alan,

You are right. Technically, she is probably not a nut, just acts like one. Of course, that makes her worse, she is EVIL.

Posted by: WhoMe? at February 17, 2004 07:06 PM

Empty-headed and evil-minded you can deduce from her own statements, but using the term "slut" about a woman you disagree with politically doesn't sit quite right with me. Unless you also cast aspersions on the sexual behavior of the men you find infuriating... ;)

Good call, Skye!

"but using the term "slut" about a woman you disagree with politically doesn't sit quite right with me. Unless you also cast aspersions on the sexual behavior of the men you find infuriating... ;)"

Thanks, Skye. I know a lot of conservative guys disagree with what I say, (I am friendly with some YCTs) but for any of them to call me a "slut" has nothing to do with what we disagree over. How about this--we call her on what she deserves to be called on for--her mean-spirited lies, her ignorance, her rude behavior. However, I feel that "media whore", as it can be applied to anyone, is a more appropriate term. It applies to all of Fox.

Coulter pretty much blows away the misrepresentations of her column here.

Back in 1997, before he was hijacked as the Dem's Disabled Vietnam Vet poster boy, the media was more honest about what actually happened to Cleland:

Jill Zuckman in a lengthy piece for The Boston Globe Sunday magazine on Aug. 3, 1997:

"Finally, the battle at Khe Sanh was over. Cleland, 25 years old, and two members of his team were now ordered to set up a radio relay station at the division assembly area, 15 miles away. The three gathered antennas, radios and a generator and made the 15-minute helicopter trip east. After unloading the equipment, Cleland climbed back into the helicopter for the ride back. But at the last minute, he decided to stay and have a beer with some friends. As the helicopter was lifting off, he shouted to the pilot that he was staying behind and jumped several feet to the ground.

"Cleland hunched over to avoid the whirring blades and ran. Turning to face the helicopter, he caught sight of a grenade on the ground where the chopper had perched. It must be mine, he thought, moving toward it. He reached for it with his right arm just as it exploded, slamming him back and irreparably altering his plans for a bright, shining future."

Ann has written a follow up piece after all of the shouting about the first article at(www.anncoulter.com) that might interest some of you.

My comment? To the fellow who signs himself "WhoMe"--get a grip on yourself. You actually had the gall to upbraid a bookstore patron about his choice of reading material? He should have bitch-slapped you for your disrespectful impudence.
